India recorded 63 initial public offerings (IPOs) in the July-September quarter of 2026, the highest quarterly listing activity on record, with companies raising ₹87,680 crore, according to a report by Uniqus Consultech. However, 55% of IPOs with a fresh-issue component reduced their proposed issue size, indicating greater sensitivity to investor expectations and market conditions.
The third quarter accounted for 73% of all IPO listings and 80% of the funds raised through IPOs during the first nine months of 2026. Total IPO fundraising during January-September stood at ₹1,09,186 crore.
September alone saw 32 companies list on the stock exchanges, including six on September 17, the highest number of listings recorded in a single day, according to the India IPO Insights publication by Uniqus Consultech.
Issuers recalibrate IPO sizes
Of the 58 IPOs with a fresh-issue component during the third quarter, 32 companies, or 55%, reduced their proposed fresh-issue size. The average reduction among these companies exceeded 20%, with the steepest cut reaching 50%.
Only six companies increased their proposed fresh-issue size, while 20 retained their original plans.
The trend suggests that companies are adjusting fundraising plans to align with prevailing market conditions and investor appetite even as listing activity reaches record levels.
Listing gains strengthen investor returns
Third-quarter IPOs delivered an average listing gain of approximately 20%, significantly higher than the 7% recorded in the April-June quarter and 1.44% in the January-March quarter.
Of the 63 companies listed during the quarter, 49, or 78%, posted positive listing-day returns. Five recorded gains exceeding 75%.
Returns strengthened further after listing. The average return on third-quarter IPOs increased from around 20% on listing day to 36% as of October 9, 2026. The average return across all IPOs listed during 2026 stood at 37% on the same date.
“The record number of IPO listings is significant, but what stands out is the recalibration happening beneath the headline numbers. More than half of the IPOs with a fresh-issue component reduced their proposed issue size, indicating greater responsiveness to investor expectations and prevailing market conditions,” said Uniqus Consultech, Partner, Accounting & Reporting Consulting, Raghuram K.
He said successful listings would increasingly depend on realistic expectations, strong preparation and sustained readiness for life as a listed company as India’s IPO market matures.
Debt repayment dominates use of proceeds
Repayment or prepayment of borrowings accounted for 48% of IPO proceeds during the third quarter, making debt reduction the largest use of funds raised.
General corporate purposes accounted for 16% of proceeds, followed by working capital requirements at 12% and capital expenditure at 10%.
The allocation indicates that companies are using the equity markets not only to finance expansion but also to strengthen their balance sheets by reducing debt.
Investor appetite remains strong
Investor demand remained resilient despite the surge in IPO supply. Average overall subscription stood at 61 times in June, 58 times in July, 70 times in August and 61 times in September.
Retail investor subscription increased from 18 times in June to 35 times in September. Institutional demand was also strong, with average qualified institutional buyer (QIB) subscription reaching 84 times in September, even as 32 companies entered the market during the month.
Market capitalisation becomes more diversified
The report also highlighted a broader shift in India’s equity market, with market value becoming less concentrated among the largest companies.
The top 10 companies accounted for approximately 28% of total market capitalisation in December 2021, but their share fell to below 18% by September 2026.
During 2026, companies outside the top 10 collectively added around ₹22 lakh crore in market value, while the market capitalisation of the top 10 declined by nearly ₹18 lakh crore.
The findings point to a rapidly expanding IPO market characterised by strong investor demand, more flexible fundraising plans and a wider distribution of market value across listed companies.
