Amazon And Tata Motors To Deploy 3,000 Electric Trucks Across India

CW Bureau ·

Amazon and Tata Motors Ltd, India’s largest commercial-vehicle manufacturer, have announced a collaboration to deploy 3,000 electric trucks across Amazon’s transportation network in India.

The deployment, described by the companies as the largest electric-truck rollout by an e-commerce company in India, will extend fleet electrification beyond last-mile delivery to middle-mile logistics and long-distance freight movement.

Rollout begins in Delhi

The initial deployment will begin in Delhi during the festive season, with light- and medium-duty electric trucks from Tata Motors operating across Amazon’s middle-mile network.

Under the arrangement, Tata Motors will supply the vehicles, while Amazon’s carrier partners will own and operate them. The collaboration combines Amazon’s nationwide logistics network and freight demand with Tata Motors’ vehicle engineering, manufacturing and service capabilities.

Highway corridor targeted

The next phase is expected to expand deployment across major national highways, with the companies aiming to electrify the 2,800-km Delhi–Bengaluru–Chennai corridor along National Highway 48.

The corridor spans seven States and connects six of India’s largest e-commerce regions. Dedicated charging infrastructure, including charging hubs being developed with infrastructure provider Yahhvi, will support the rollout.

Government backs electric mobility

“The collaboration between Tata Motors and Amazon shows sustained demand from a nationwide logistics network being met by electric trucks manufactured in India. Through schemes such as PM E-DRIVE, PLI Auto and PLI ACC, the Government will continue to support this transition,” Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H. D. Kumaraswamy, said.

“This collaboration between Amazon and Tata Motors sets an exemplary precedent, showing how progressive governance and industry leadership can join forces to accelerate sustainable urban logistics and improve the quality of life for the citizens of Delhi,” Delhi Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Transport and IT, Pankaj Kumar Singh, said.

Companies target lower emissions

“Electrifying our logistics and transportation network is an important part of Amazon’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. We have made significant progress in India, with more than 15,000 electric vehicles operating across 500-plus cities,” Amazon, Vice President, Operations, APAC, Middle East, Africa and Turkey, Abhinav Singh, said.

“We are now setting a bold vision to scale electric trucking, addressing one of the toughest challenges in decarbonising transportation. Our collaboration with Tata Motors marks an important step towards realising this vision,” he said.

Going beyond vehicle deployment

“Working with Amazon India, we are going beyond vehicle deployment to provide charging infrastructure, servicing and operational support,” Tata Motors Ltd, Vice President and Business Head – Trucks, Rajesh Kaul, said.

“This collaboration will demonstrate how electric trucks can be integrated into large-scale logistics operations, with the potential to help reduce transportation-related emissions. We believe this effort will contribute to the broader adoption of electric commercial vehicles in the country,” he said.
