Ashok Leyland Ltd, the flagship commercial vehicle manufacturer of the Hinduja Group, reported a 23% year-on-year increase in total vehicle sales, including exports, to 21,888 units in October 2026 against 17,820 units in the corresponding month last year.
The growth was primarily driven by the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) truck segment, which recorded a 41% increase in monthly sales. Light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales also maintained double-digit growth, while bus sales declined.
The company’s domestic sales increased 24% to 20,224 units from 16,314 units in October 2025. Including exports, total sales rose by 4,068 vehicles during the month.
M&HCV trucks emerge as the biggest growth driver
The M&HCV truck segment recorded the strongest performance, with domestic sales increasing 39% to 11,102 units in October 2026 from 7,972 units a year earlier.
Including exports, truck sales rose 41% to 11,613 units from 8,257 units, translating into an additional 3,356 vehicles.
This segment alone accounted for approximately 83% of the company’s incremental domestic sales during October, underlining its importance in driving the overall growth.
The M&HCV bus segment, however, remained under pressure. Domestic sales declined 6% to 1,544 units from 1,639 units. Including exports, bus sales fell 11% to 2,314 units from 2,608 units.
Consequently, combined M&HCV sales, including trucks and buses, increased 28% to 13,927 units from 10,865 units.
LCV sales maintain double-digit growth
The light commercial vehicle segment continued to register healthy growth.
Domestic LCV sales increased 13% to 7,578 units in October 2026 against 6,703 units in the year-ago period.
Including exports, sales grew 14% to 7,961 units from 6,955 units, adding 1,006 vehicles to the monthly volume.
The performance indicates that demand remained broad-based across the commercial vehicle portfolio, although growth was considerably stronger in heavy trucks than in buses or light commercial vehicles.
Cumulative sales growth remains strong
Ashok Leyland’s cumulative domestic sales during April-October FY27 increased 24% to 1,26,101 units from 1,01,873 units in the corresponding period of FY26.
Including exports, cumulative sales rose 22% to 1,35,328 units from 1,11,174 units.
The M&HCV truck segment continued to lead cumulative growth, with sales increasing 35% to 69,368 units from 51,252 units.
Cumulative M&HCV bus sales, however, declined 12% to 16,160 units from 18,402 units, including exports.
LCV sales increased 20% to 49,800 units from 41,520 units.
What the numbers indicate
Three trends stand out in Ashok Leyland’s October performance.
First, heavy truck demand is driving the company’s growth, with the segment registering 41% growth in combined domestic and export sales. Its contribution to incremental monthly volumes is particularly significant.
Second, LCV sales are providing a relatively stable second growth engine, with cumulative volumes increasing 20% during April-October FY27.
Third, the bus segment remains a weak spot. The 12% cumulative decline in combined domestic and export sales suggests that growth in the commercial vehicle market is not uniform across categories.
Overall, Ashok Leyland’s 22% cumulative sales growth in the first seven months of FY27 indicates strong volume momentum, led by trucks and supported by LCVs. The sustainability of this growth will depend on continued freight and infrastructure-related demand, alongside a recovery in bus volumes.
