MakeMyTrip has launched Price Drop Protection, a new feature that refunds travellers the difference if their flight fare drops after booking, addressing concerns among flyers who delay bookings in anticipation of lower fares.
The feature is available for domestic and international flights, covering both one-way and round-trip bookings. It is designed to encourage travellers to book earlier while providing protection against subsequent fare reductions.
Protection covers fare drops after booking
Travellers can opt for Price Drop Protection while making their booking, starting at ₹229 per person for domestic flights and ₹349 per person for international flights.
Under the feature, the maximum refund on the fare difference is ₹2,500 per person for domestic flights and ₹3,000 per person for international flights.
The protection applies from the time of booking until six hours before departure. If the applicable fare drops during this period, MakeMyTrip notifies the traveller and credits the refund to the original mode of payment.
Feature targets delayed booking behaviour
MakeMyTrip said travellers often search for the same flights multiple times before booking, driven partly by uncertainty over whether fares could decline later.
Personal and professional commitments can also remain fluid while travel plans are being finalised, resulting in prolonged fare tracking and bookings closer to the date of travel.
Price Drop Protection is aimed at reducing this uncertainty by allowing travellers to book when convenient without having to worry about losing out if the fare subsequently falls.
The feature has been rolled out following a testing phase during which it gained traction among travellers. MakeMyTrip said a portion of customers who opted for the protection experienced fare reductions on both domestic and international flights.
Part of wider flight assurance suite
MakeMyTrip COO, Flights, Corporate, GCC and Marketing, Raj Rishi Singh said travellers should not have to choose between booking early and worrying about fares falling later.
“Price Drop Protection lets them book when it works for them, with the reassurance that if the fare drops, they are protected. It is a simple way to offer more flexibility and peace of mind while planning a trip,” Singh said.
The new feature joins MakeMyTrip’s existing flight assurance offerings, including Zero Cancellation and Free Date Change.
With Price Drop Protection, the company is extending its flight assurance proposition beyond cancellation and date-change flexibility to include protection against post-booking fare movements.
