Messaging platform WhatsApp has announced the rollout of username reservations, allowing users to secure a unique username ahead of the global launch of its much-awaited username feature later this year.
The move is aimed at giving users an alternative way to connect without sharing their personal phone numbers, reinforcing WhatsApp’s focus on privacy and user control.
Users can connect without sharing phone numbers
Once the feature is fully launched, users who enable usernames will be able to communicate with people and businesses without revealing their phone numbers during the first interaction.
WhatsApp said the feature is designed for situations where users want to connect with new acquaintances, join community groups or interact with businesses while keeping their mobile numbers private.
The company noted that users joining groups, such as school or sports community chats, may not always want to share their personal contact details with everyone in the conversation.
Early reservations open
With more than three billion users on the platform, WhatsApp is opening username reservations early to give users an opportunity to secure their preferred identity before the feature becomes widely available.
The company said usernames should ideally be unique and known only to people the user wants to connect with. To simplify the process, WhatsApp has also introduced a username generator that can suggest available options.
Special option for businesses and creators
Recognising the importance of brand consistency, WhatsApp will allow creators, businesses and organisations to reserve the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook, where available.
The feature is expected to help brands maintain a consistent digital identity across Meta’s platforms while making it easier for customers to discover and contact them.
Privacy remains central
WhatsApp said usernames have been designed with privacy as the primary objective. There will be no searchable username directory or public suggestions, meaning users must know the exact username to initiate contact for the first time.
The platform is also introducing an optional username key, providing an additional layer of control over who can send messages using a username.
Gradual rollout planned
Users can reserve a username by updating to the latest version of WhatsApp and navigating to Settings > Account > Username.
The company said the feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months and users will receive an in-app notification when usernames become available in their respective countries.
The rollout marks another step in WhatsApp’s broader efforts to strengthen privacy while making it easier for individuals, creators and businesses to communicate without exposing personal information.
