Air India and Riyadh Air have laid the groundwork for a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening connectivity between India and Saudi Arabia, a move that could deepen aviation links between two of the world’s fastest-growing travel markets.
The two full-service carriers have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore a broad collaboration spanning passenger travel, loyalty programmes, cargo operations and digital initiatives, as both airlines seek to capitalise on rising business, tourism and family travel demand between the two countries.
Building a stronger India-Saudi travel network
The proposed partnership will leverage the airlines’ respective hubs in Delhi, Mumbai and Riyadh to create a more integrated travel network connecting passengers across India, Saudi Arabia and onward international destinations.
Subject to regulatory approvals, the carriers plan to introduce interline and codeshare agreements that would allow passengers to book journeys across both networks through a single ticket while benefiting from smoother connections.
The collaboration comes at a time when air travel demand between India and the Gulf region continues to expand, driven by strong economic ties, increasing tourism flows and one of the world’s largest expatriate communities.
Strategic significance for Air India
The agreement further strengthens Air India’s international partnership strategy under the Tata Group ownership. Since its privatisation in 2022, Air India has aggressively expanded its global alliance footprint, building 25 codeshare partnerships and more than 120 interline agreements with airlines worldwide. These arrangements currently provide Air India customers access to over 1,000 destinations globally.
The partnership with Riyadh Air adds another important growth market to Air India’s expanding international network strategy as the carrier continues its transformation into a global aviation player.
Air India Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director Campbell Wilson said, “India and Saudi Arabia are two important growth markets in global aviation today, and the scale and momentum in both countries make this a natural partnership. We look forward to working with Riyadh Air to bring together complementary strengths of the two airlines to unlock that opportunity with a focus on offering our guests more choice across our combined networks and elevating their travel experiences.”
Riyadh Air eyes India’s fast-growing aviation market
For Riyadh Air, the partnership represents an important step in establishing a presence in one of the world’s most dynamic aviation markets.
Saudi Arabia’s newest national carrier is a key pillar of the Kingdom’s broader aviation and tourism ambitions, which aim to position Riyadh as a major global aviation hub connecting Asia, Europe and Africa.
India’s large outbound travel market and deep people-to-people links with Saudi Arabia make it a strategic priority for the airline.
Riyadh Air Chief Executive Officer Tony Douglas, said, “India is one of the most important and dynamic aviation markets in the world, and this partnership with Air India marks a defining step in Riyadh Air’s mission to connect Saudi Arabia with key global destinations. Together, we will offer guests a seamless, world-class experience that reflects the deep cultural and economic bonds shared between our two nations.”
Beyond passenger travel
The MoU extends beyond passenger connectivity and includes discussions around reciprocal loyalty programme benefits, cargo services, operational support and technology collaboration.
Such initiatives could help both carriers improve customer engagement while expanding revenue opportunities across multiple business segments.
London route creates new opportunities
The announcement comes as Riyadh Air prepares to commence commercial operations, with inaugural flights between Riyadh and London Heathrow scheduled to begin on July 1.
The route could create new travel options for Indian passengers, enabling one-stop access to the United Kingdom and broader European destinations through Riyadh.
As Air India continues expanding its global reach and Riyadh Air prepares for rapid international growth, the partnership highlights the increasing importance of India-Saudi Arabia aviation ties in shaping future travel flows across the region.
