Japanese electrical and electronic equipment major Mitsubishi Electric has commissioned a new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility at Gummidipoondi, near Chennai, strengthening its India manufacturing footprint and signalling a deeper localisation push in the fast-growing HVAC segment.
The facility was inaugurated virtually by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and is located within the Mahindra Origins industrial park. Built at an investment of ₹2,100 crore, the plant marks Mitsubishi Electric India’s second manufacturing unit in the country, following its Factory Automation Systems facility in Pune, which began operations in 2023.
Spread over 210,000 square metres, the Gummidipoondi plant has an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioners and 650,000 compressor units. The facility is expected to generate over 2,100 direct and indirect jobs.
Beyond capacity expansion, the company said the plant will play a key role in strengthening the regional supplier ecosystem by increasing local sourcing of components, upgrading technical capabilities among vendors, and supporting workforce skill development aligned with global manufacturing standards.
By manufacturing air conditioners and compressors locally, Mitsubishi Electric aims to reduce dependence on imports, improve supply-chain resilience, and contribute to the development of a self-reliant HVAC manufacturing ecosystem in India. The move aligns with India’s broader push to scale domestic electronics and appliance manufacturing.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Industries T.R.B. Rajaa highlighted the State’s manufacturing strength, noting that Tamil Nadu hosts around 40,000 factories and is currently growing at 11.19%, making it the only Indian state posting double-digit growth. The State accounts for 31% of India’s electronics production and 41% of electronics exports, reinforcing its appeal as a manufacturing hub for global companies.
Atsushi Takase, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Electric India, said India is seeing rapid growth in demand for energy-efficient, high-quality air-conditioning solutions. The new facility, he said, will enable the company to respond faster to customer needs, enhance quality control, and support sustainable operations through local manufacturing.
Takase added that Mitsubishi Electric plans to position India as a core hub within its global air-conditioning business, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to the Indian market—and to Tamil Nadu in particular.
