Breaking The Bedrock: Hindustan Zinc Sets New Gender Benchmark

CW Bureau ·

In an industry long associated with hard hats, heavy machinery and hardened stereotypes, Hindustan Zinc Ltd is scripting a different story, one of inclusion powered by technology and intent.

The company has achieved 26.3% women representation across its workforce, the highest in India’s metals and mining sector. In a space traditionally perceived as physically intensive and male-dominated, the milestone marks more than a statistical achievement; it signals a structural shift in how mining talent is being defined and deployed.

Today, over 745 women professionals are part of Hindustan Zinc’s workforce. Of these, more than 314 women engineers and equivalent professionals are working in core operational roles across underground mines, smelters and critical technical functions. From operating heavy earth-moving equipment to managing night shifts and leading underground mine rescue operations, women at the company are no longer on the periphery, they are at the operational core.

Breaking Ground, Literally

The transformation has translated into several industry-first milestones. Hindustan Zinc was among the early movers in deploying women in underground mining roles. It went on to constitute an all-women underground mine rescue team, a symbolic and practical shift in a domain where emergency response has historically been male-dominated. The inclusion of women across night shifts in mining and smelting operations further marked a significant change in traditional workforce dynamics.

The company’s leadership believes these steps are not acts of tokenism but strategic decisions aligned with the future of mining.

Hindustan Zinc CEO said: “Empowering women in mining is not merely a matter of equity; it is a strategic imperative for the future of the industry. At Hindustan Zinc, we have cultivated a culture where women lead from the front,  whether operating underground mines, driving automation, or advancing sustainable metallurgy. As we work toward achieving 30% diversity by 2030, our focus remains on building a workplace where inclusion fuels innovation and gender is never a barrier to excellence.”

Campaigning For Change

To deepen the momentum, the company has launched a 25-day campaign titled ‘She Knows the Ground She Stands On.’ The initiative is designed to accelerate women’s participation in the metals and mining industry by challenging outdated perceptions about the sector.

At the heart of the campaign is an immersive experience that invited around 15 women from premier science institutions across India to engage directly with Hindustan Zinc’s mining ecosystem.

The campaign also features authentic day-in-the-life narratives of women professionals across operations, industry testimonials, and insights into structured career pathways in mining and metallurgy. The idea is to showcase mining not as a relic of the industrial past but as a technology-driven, knowledge-intensive profession.

Technology As An Equaliser

Hindustan Zinc’s diversity push is closely linked to its technology-first transformation. The company has embedded Industry 4.0 practices, robotics, automation and real-time analytics across its operations. Its digital mines are equipped with tele-remote underground operations, drone-based surveillance, remote blasting systems and advanced automation platforms.

As global industries grapple with talent shortages and ESG expectations, Hindustan Zinc’s approach positions inclusion as a competitive advantage rather than a compliance checkbox. The journey towards 30% diversity by 2030 now serves as both a benchmark and a statement of intent.
