The Union government is moving ahead with plans to establish a new Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) testing centre in Mandya district of Karnataka, a development expected to strengthen India’s automotive testing infrastructure while creating new employment and innovation opportunities in the region.
Union heavy industry minister D Kumaraswamy announced that the process for setting up the facility is progressing at the central level and will move to the next stage once land allotment formalities are completed.
Speaking at a public programme after laying the foundation stone for a ₹14-crore indoor sports complex at VC Farm in Mandya, Kumaraswamy said a team of experts will visit the district to inspect the proposed site once the land allotment letter is issued.
“The ARAI unit will be established here, and once it comes up, it will create employment opportunities not only for the youth of Mandya but also for neighbouring districts,” the minister said, adding that efforts to bring industrial investments to the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency are progressing steadily.
Strategic Addition To India’s Automotive Testing Network
The proposed facility will operate under Automotive Research Association of India, the country’s premier automotive research and certification body that plays a critical role in vehicle testing, homologation, and regulatory compliance.
Headquartered in Pune, ARAI was established in 1966 as an autonomous body affiliated with the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The organisation has been instrumental in shaping India’s automotive regulatory framework, including emission standards, vehicle safety norms, and technology validation.
Backbone Of Vehicle Certification In India
Before any automobile model is launched in India, it must undergo rigorous testing and certification to ensure compliance with national standards such as Bharat Stage emission norms, safety regulations, and performance benchmarks. ARAI is among the primary agencies authorised to conduct such tests and issue homologation certificates for vehicles and components.
Automakers ranging from passenger car manufacturers to commercial vehicle producers rely on ARAI’s laboratories and testing tracks for validation of new technologies, emission control systems, fuel efficiency standards, and safety features.
Growing Network Of ARAI Facilities
Over the years, ARAI has expanded beyond its main campus in Pune to support the rapidly growing Indian automotive sector. Apart from its primary research and testing hub, the organisation operates specialised laboratories and satellite facilities across different regions, supporting testing, research collaborations, and industry partnerships.
With India emerging as one of the world’s largest automobile markets and a major manufacturing hub, the expansion of testing infrastructure has become increasingly important to support new mobility technologies, stricter emission regulations, and the growing electric vehicle ecosystem.
