Carborundum Universal Starts Thin Wheel Production At Hosur Facility

CW Bureau ·

Carborundum Universal Ltd (Cumi), part of the Murugappa Group, has commenced commercial production of cutting and grinding wheels (thin wheels) at its manufacturing facility in Hosur.

The new plant established at an investment of ₹83 crore is expected to generate a turnover of around ₹160 crore at peak capacity utilisation.

The new production line has been set up following the company’s acquisition of the manufacturing lines, technology and brand of Dronco GmbH, Germany, in 2023. The acquired manufacturing lines have since been relocated and commissioned at Cumi India’s Hosur facility.

With the commissioning of the new plant, Cumi India’s total annual cutting and grinding wheel manufacturing capacity will more than double -from 45 million wheels to over 90 million wheels per year.

According to the company, the facility incorporates several advanced manufacturing features designed to enhance operational efficiency and product quality. These include a state-of-the-art mixing unit equipped with SCADA-based process controls, automated press lines integrated with unmanned oven handling and curing systems (U-Lines), and an ambient control system that maintains stability in raw material characteristics.

These systems are expected to enable consistent product performance while strengthening cost competitiveness.

The plant has also received certification from the Organisation for the Safety of Abrasives, a globally recognised body whose protected trademark certifies that cutting and grinding tools meet the highest safety standards.

Products manufactured at the Hosur facility will cater to a wide range of industrial applications, including fabrication, general engineering and construction.
