In a significant shift for India’s urban mobility landscape, Bharat Taxi has emerged as the country’s first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, positioning itself as a strong, homegrown alternative to global and private aggregator giants like Uber and Ola.
Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, Bharat Taxi was established on June 6, 2025, by eight national-level cooperative institutions and officially launched on February 5, 2026. The initiative aligns with the Union government’s vision of Sahkar se Samriddhi, aimed at strengthening the cooperative sector while promoting inclusive, citizen-centric mobility.
A Shift From Driver-Partner To Sarathi-Owner
At the heart of Bharat Taxi’s model is a structural shift from the conventional driver-partner system to a Sarathi-owner framework. Here, drivers are not just service providers, they are co-owners of the platform.
As members of the cooperative, drivers have representation on the board of management and actively participate in profit-sharing. This democratic governance structure ensures that operational decisions are made collectively, with two elected driver representatives included on the board to safeguard driver interests.
Zero Commission, Maximum Earnings
In stark contrast to aggregator platforms that charge commissions on every ride, Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission model. The entire fare, after statutory deductions, goes directly to the driver.
This driver-centric revenue model is designed to enhance earnings, ensure fair income distribution, and create a more equitable ecosystem. The cooperative determines fares transparently, taking into account operational costs, travel distance, and prevailing market dynamics.
Competing With Aggregator Giants
While platforms like Uber and Ola are driven by investor-backed growth and commission-based revenues, Bharat Taxi is built on cooperative principles, collective ownership, democratic governance, and shared prosperity.
This fundamentally different approach allows Bharat Taxi to compete on pricing, transparency, and driver satisfaction. By eliminating commission layers and redistributing value back to drivers, the platform offers a compelling alternative for both drivers and riders.
Affordable, Transparent And Inclusive Mobility
Bharat Taxi aims to provide affordable and transparent mobility services, particularly targeting accessibility for low-income and underserved communities. The platform’s fare structures are periodically reviewed and communicated clearly to ensure trust among stakeholders.
Also, the initiative focuses on driver welfare, promoting dignified working conditions, social security measures, and long-term livelihood stability.
Tech-Enabled, Future-Ready Platform
The platform leverages a robust digital infrastructure for ride booking, vehicle tracking, digital payments, and customer support. It is also integrated with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), enabling interoperability across multiple mobility demand platforms such as DigiHaat, Bob Rides, and OneTicket.
This open-network integration allows Bharat Taxi’s supply to be accessed by various demand platforms, expanding its reach and usability within India’s evolving digital commerce ecosystem.
Expanding Footprint Across India
Currently operational in Delhi NCR, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, as well as key cities in Gujarat such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Somnath, and Dwarka, Bharat Taxi is gearing up for aggressive expansion.
Over the next three years, the platform aims to scale across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, extending services down to the tehsil level. This phased rollout is expected to significantly enhance access to affordable mobility services across the country.
Building A Level Playing Field
Importantly, the Centre has not made any direct investment in Bharat Taxi, positioning it to compete on equal footing with established aggregators. The cooperative mobilises resources through share capital contributions, membership fees and other permissible channels.
As India’s mobility sector evolves, Bharat Taxi represents a bold experiment in cooperative economics, one that could redefine how value is created and shared in the gig economy, while offering a credible challenge to entrenched players like Uber and Ola.
