Jindal Steel has completed its six million tonnes per annum (MTPA) expansion at its Angul Integrated Steel Complex in Odisha with the commissioning of the third Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF-3) of 3 MTPA.
With this, the plant’s total crude steel capacity has doubled to 12 MTPA, positioning it among India’s largest single-location integrated steel complexes.
Integrated capacity ramp-up
The expansion marks the operationalisation of both BOF-2 and BOF-3, along with a suite of upstream and downstream facilities, including coke ovens, the cold rolling mill (CRM) complex and other critical infrastructure.
This ensures seamless integration of operations and supports a phased ramp-up of production capacity at the Angul facility.
Overall capacity enhancement
With the completion of this phase, the company has fully executed its planned expansion from 6 MTPA to 12 MTPA at Angul within the scheduled timeframe.
The company’s overall crude steel capacity has now increased to 15.6 MTPA, including 3.6 MTPA at its Raigarh facility.
Growth and margin outlook
The expanded capacity is expected to drive higher production volumes and improve capacity utilisation, supporting revenue growth in the coming years.
Increased scale and integration are also likely to deliver operating leverage benefits, enabling the company to optimise costs and enhance margins.
Strategic significance
The expansion strengthens the company’s positioning in the domestic steel sector and aligns with broader efforts to augment India’s industrial capacity.
It also supports national priorities of infrastructure development and self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The Angul facility develops special-grade and nuclear application plates for critical applications such as boilers, petroleum pipes, ship building, automotive, oil exploration, earthmovers, warships, armoured vehicles, and nuclear applications.
