Sunil Mittal To Step Aside From Airtel Africa, Gopal Vittal Set To Take Over

CW Bureau ·

In a significant leadership transition, Airtel Africa plc has announced that Sunil Bharti Mittal will step down as chairman at the conclusion of its Annual General Meeting in July 2026. The move marks the end of an important chapter that began with the company’s public listing in 2019 and its subsequent rise into the FTSE 100.

A Planned Succession With Strategic Alignment

Stepping into the role will be Gopal Vittal, who will assume the position of non-executive chair effective the same date. Vittal’s elevation comes as part of a structured nomination process aligned with shareholder agreements involving Bharti Airtel and its affiliates.

A seasoned telecom leader, Vittal brings with him a strong operational track record, having steered Bharti Airtel to record market share gains in a highly competitive environment. His current role as Chairman of the GSMA further reinforces his global industry standing. While his appointment will not meet independence criteria under the UK Corporate Governance Code, the Board appears confident that his strategic insight outweighs governance technicalities.

Founding Family Retains Strategic Connect

Adding another layer of continuity, Shravin Bharti Mittal will take on the role of Deputy Chair. His appointment ensures a sustained link with the founding Bharti family while strengthening coordination with key verticals such as Airtel Money and the company’s Dubai headquarters.

Board Refresh And Governance Evolution

The transition also coincides with the retirement of Annika Poutiainen, who concludes over seven years on the Board. Her tenure has been marked by a strong emphasis on governance, financial discipline, and sustainability leadership.

Airtel Africa plc, chair, Sunil Bharti Mittal said: “It has been an honour to lead Airtel Africa during a transformative phase. With a robust strategy and an exceptional leadership team in place, I believe this is the right time to step aside. The company is well-positioned to continue advancing the transformative power of connectivity across Africa.”

Airtel Africa plc, senior independent director, Tsega Gebreyes said: “Sunil Bharti Mittal’s contribution to Airtel Africa’s journey, from acquisition to FTSE 100 inclusion, has been extraordinary. His leadership has been foundational, and we are grateful for his continued willingness to support the company going forward.”
