A Watershed Year For EVs: India’s Electric Mobility Story Accelerates

CW Bureau ·

India’s electric mobility journey gathered remarkable momentum in FY26, emerging as a defining year for the sector with robust growth across all vehicle categories. The year underscored the country’s accelerating transition towards cleaner mobility, backed by rising consumer adoption and expanding ecosystem support.

Strong double-digit growth across segments

Total electric vehicle (EV) retail sales across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles reached approximately 24.52 lakh units during FY26, marking a strong year-on-year growth of nearly 24.6%. Notably, every segment recorded healthy double-digit expansion, reflecting broad-based demand for electric mobility solutions.

Two-wheelers lead volumes, gain market share

Electric two-wheelers continued to dominate in terms of volumes, crossing the 14 lakh units milestone with a growth of 21.81%. The segment also saw its market share rise to 6.5%, with March 2026 alone witnessing a record monthly penetration of 9.79%, highlighting growing consumer confidence and adoption in urban and semi-urban markets.

Three-wheelers cement dominance

Electric three-wheelers maintained their stronghold in the segment, clocking sales of 8.30 lakh units, up 18.87% year-on-year. With a commanding 60.9% market share, the segment achieved a significant milestone—six out of every ten three-wheelers sold during the year were electric, marking one of the fastest transitions globally in a vehicle category.

Passenger vehicles see explosive growth

The electric passenger vehicle segment recorded the sharpest surge, growing 83.63% to reach 1,99,923 units, just shy of the 2 lakh mark. This rapid growth signals increasing consumer acceptance of EVs in the personal mobility space, aided by improved product offerings and expanding charging infrastructure.

Commercial vehicles more than double

Electric commercial vehicles also witnessed exceptional traction, with sales more than doubling by 120.57% to 19,454 units. The segment’s market share nearly doubled to 1.83%, indicating rising interest from fleet operators and logistics players seeking cost efficiencies and sustainability benefits.

Structural momentum intact

“This is not just an automobile industry achievement,  it is a testament to India’s ability to lead a mass-market energy transition, from the last-mile auto-rickshaw to the family car. This shows that the structural momentum behind India’s EV journey remains firmly intact,” said Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President, C S Vigneshwar.
