GS1 India, a supply chain standards organisation, has inaugurated its expanded Chennai Development Centre, marking a milestone in its mission to support India’s digital transformation journey.
Enhanced capabilities and innovation focus
The upgraded facility consolidates development activities and brings together a stronger team to upscale capabilities and accelerate innovation in 2D migration, traceability, and AI-powered supply chain solutions.
From tech lab to comprehensive hub
Following the initial launch of its Chennai tech lab in 2023, this expansion transforms the facility into a comprehensive hub for GS1 India’s digital backbone.
Focus on flagship platforms
The centre will now focus on the large-scale deployment of flagship platforms such as DataKart, the Smart Consumer App, ClickIt app, and traceability solutions.
Supporting global compliance requirements
With this, GS1 India is better equipped to help Indian industries meet emerging global requirements like the Digital Product Passport (DPP), Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA), and EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), through AI-driven traceability and standardized digital tools, while preparing for the global transition to 2D barcodes under GS1 Ambition 2027.
AI integration for data accuracy
A key focus of the expanded facility is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate data verification, ensuring that the billions of scans occurring globally are backed by accurate, high-integrity product information.
Leadership perspective
GS1 India CEO S Swaminathan said: “In today’s rapidly changing world, this centre will build the latest tools and apps to support small and medium enterprises, the backbone of India’s economy. By empowering these enterprises amidst digital transformation, we aim to ensure they remain competitive and future-ready.”
Strengthening consumer and healthcare transparency
The facility is strategically designed to address the growing demand for transparency in the consumer goods and healthcare sectors. The team is tasked with upgrading the UI/UX and backend intelligence of applications like the Smart Consumer App, enabling shoppers to access reliable data via their smartphones.
Driving interoperable industry solutions
Beyond consumer applications, the center serves as the engineering engine for interoperable industry solutions and trusted data standards as adopted in over 150 countries.
