VA Tech Wabag Ltd, a leading multinational water technology company, has secured a large order worth up to $75 million from the City of Vienna’s Municipal Department MA 31 – Wiener Wasser for the expansion of the Donauinsel Water Works in Vienna, Austria.
The project further strengthens Wabag’s position as a leading provider of integrated drinking water and wastewater treatment infrastructure while reinforcing its strategic focus on the European market.
Flagship project in Austria
The Donauinsel Water Works expansion is one of Vienna’s most significant drinking water infrastructure investments in decades and forms a key component of the city’s “Wiener Wasser 2050″ strategy.
For Wabag, the contract serves as a flagship reference project in Austria, showcasing its capabilities in delivering climate-resilient and sustainable water technology solutions for major public utilities.
The overall facility is scheduled for completion and commissioning in 2030, followed by acceptance milestones.
End-to-end technology package
Under the contract, Wabag will execute the complete technology package for the new water treatment facility, including process engineering, electrical engineering, instrumentation and control systems, as well as building services.
The new plant will feature an advanced multi-barrier treatment process incorporating oxidation, ozonation, advanced oxidation, filtration, activated carbon filtration and UV disinfection to ensure high-quality drinking water.
Strengthening Vienna’s water security
Designed to process up to 1,000 litres per second, equivalent to approximately 86 million litres per day (MLD), the expanded facility will play a vital role in securing Vienna’s long-term drinking water supply.
The project will enhance the resilience of the city’s water infrastructure by adding a controllable groundwater-based supply source alongside Vienna’s renowned alpine spring water system.
The plant will treat groundwater from protected well fields before supplying drinking water to Vienna’s distribution network, helping meet the needs of a growing population, rising peak demand and climate change-related challenges.
