VA Tech Wabag Ltd (WABAG), a leading pure-play multinational water technology company, has secured a mega desalination project in Kuwait from the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy, strengthening its presence across the GCC region.
The company said it has won the contract for the design, construction and operation of the Doha Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System – Stage II. The project will be executed through an unincorporated joint venture led by WABAG in association with Kuwait-based Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company (HEISCO).
Project to add 272 MLD desalination capacity
The project involves the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a 60 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant, equivalent to approximately 272 million litres per day (MLD).
The facility will feature a state-of-the-art recarbonation system and is scheduled for completion within 36 months. In addition to construction, the contract includes a five-year operations and maintenance period aimed at ensuring long-term reliability and operational efficiency.
According to the company, the plant will deploy advanced desalination technologies to supply high-quality potable water, helping Kuwait address growing water demand while strengthening the country’s water security infrastructure.
Sustainability focus with solar power integration
As part of its sustainability strategy, the project will incorporate solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to partially meet the plant’s energy requirements. The integration of renewable energy is expected to support Kuwait’s clean energy goals while reducing the overall carbon footprint of the facility.
The order further strengthens WABAG’s position in the desalination segment, where the company has established a significant presence across the Middle East through the delivery of large-scale water treatment and desalination projects.
Significant milestone
Rohan Mittal, Head – Strategy and Business Growth, GCC, WABAG, said, “The Doha SWRO II Project marks a significant milestone in WABAG’s growth journey in the GCC region and our maiden entry into Kuwait, a strategically important market. We are honoured to have been entrusted by the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy with the delivery of this critical project, which will play a vital role in strengthening Kuwait’s water security.”
He added, “This landmark win reinforces our growing leadership in the West Asia desalination market and underscores our commitment to enabling a more water-secure and sustainable future through advanced and energy-efficient desalination solutions.”
The latest contract is expected to enhance WABAG’s order book while reinforcing its reputation as a key player in delivering large-scale, sustainable water infrastructure projects across the GCC region.
