Flair Writing Industries Ltd (FWIL) has cemented its footprint in India’s growing pencil market, leveraging strong traction in the mechanical pencil segment and the commissioning of a new wooden pencil manufacturing facility in Surat as part of its broader diversification and growth strategy.

The company said FY26 marked a significant year for its pencil business, with the mechanical pencil category witnessing strong consumer acceptance and delivering sales of approximately 147 million pieces during the year. The performance underscores the growing popularity of innovative writing products and Flair’s ability to address evolving consumer preferences.

Mechanical pencil segment gains momentum
The robust growth in mechanical pencils has enabled Flair to carve out a differentiated position within the writing instruments market. The company views the category as an important growth driver, supported by increasing adoption among students and professionals seeking convenience, precision and durability.

The strong sales performance reflects Flair’s continued focus on product innovation and its ability to build consumer engagement in emerging categories.

Surat facility strengthens wooden pencil presence
Building on the success of its mechanical pencil portfolio, Flair operationalised its wooden pencil manufacturing facility in Surat during FY26. The new facility marks a strategic milestone for the company as it seeks to expand its footprint in the broader pencil category under its Creative segment.

Industry estimates suggest that pencils account for nearly 12% of India’s overall writing instruments market. The segment, valued at around ₹1,650 crore in FY23, is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 14% to reach nearly ₹3,300 crore by FY28.

Wooden pencils continue to dominate the category, contributing close to 90% of the market, making the segment a significant opportunity for long-term growth.

Expanding presence in a high-growth market
According to the company, its success in mechanical pencils demonstrates its capability to identify emerging opportunities and create differentiated offerings. The addition of wooden pencil manufacturing capacity now enables Flair to participate meaningfully in the largest and most established segment of the pencil market.

The twin developments are expected to strengthen the company’s position in the creative products category while enhancing manufacturing capabilities and product diversification.

Diversification strategy gathers pace
Flair said its expansion in the pencil segment aligns with its broader vision of building a diversified and high-growth portfolio spanning writing instruments, creative products, steel bottles and houseware products.

The company has steadily expanded beyond its core pen business through brands including Flair, Flair Creative, Hauser and Pierre Cardin, while recently introducing ZOOX in India. The Flair Creative portfolio, launched in FY21, has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments in the company’s product basket, contributing an increasing share to overall revenues.

FWIL has also accelerated the growth of its steel bottles and houseware business while distributing MAPED-branded products in India.

With continued investments in manufacturing, category expansion and innovation, the company remains confident of achieving its growth guidance for FY27 while strengthening its position across multiple consumer product segments.
