Maruti Suzuki True Value Marks 25 Years With 65 Lakh Customers

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, the country’s largest carmaker, said its pre-owned car retail network, Maruti Suzuki True Value, has served more than 65 lakh customers over 25 years, highlighting the growing importance of organised players in India’s used-car market.

Launched in 2001, True Value introduced a structured framework for buying and selling pre-owned cars, with a focus on vehicle evaluation, certification, documentation and warranty support. The business has since evolved into a nationwide retail network, with 662 outlets across 338 cities.

The milestone comes as pre-owned cars gain traction among aspirational buyers, including young customers purchasing their first vehicles. For Maruti Suzuki, the segment offers an opportunity to extend its customer base beyond new-car sales and build relationships with buyers at different stages of vehicle ownership.

Organised retail drives customer confidence
The pre-owned car market has traditionally faced challenges involving vehicle condition, pricing transparency, documentation and uncertainty over maintenance history. True Value’s structured evaluation and certification processes seek to address these concerns by providing buyers with verified vehicle information and greater assurance over their purchases.

The company has also introduced warranty policies and verification of service records and vehicle documentation to strengthen customer confidence. Its retail experience has evolved to incorporate digital integration and showroom-style facilities, bringing the purchase process closer to that of a new car.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Partho Banerjee, said True Value had continually adapted to changing customer expectations while focusing on transparent processes, assured quality and technology-enabled experiences.

“With pre-owned car ownership striking a new chord with aspirational customers, the share of young first-time buyers are constantly increasing amongst True Value customers,” he said.

Financing widens the customer base
Financing is emerging as an important component of the used-car buying process, enabling customers to spread the cost of vehicle ownership rather than depend entirely on upfront payments.

Through Maruti Suzuki Smart Finance, True Value customers can access financing options from leading public and private sector banks and non-banking financial companies on an end-to-end digital platform.

Combining vehicle certification with financing access could help the company reach a wider pool of buyers, particularly those entering the passenger vehicle market for the first time. The integrated approach also allows Maruti Suzuki to address multiple stages of the purchase journey, from vehicle selection and verification to funding.

A strategic extension of the new-car business
True Value’s 25-year journey reflects the growing role of organised retail in the pre-owned car ecosystem. Its nationwide network gives Maruti Suzuki a platform to participate in a market where customer trust, vehicle quality and access to finance can influence purchase decisions.

The scale of its operations,662 outlets across 338 cities,  also provides a distribution advantage, allowing the company to serve customers beyond major urban centres.

For Maruti Suzuki, the opportunity extends beyond used-car transactions. A trusted resale ecosystem can potentially support customer retention, facilitate upgrades to newer vehicles and strengthen the overall ownership experience.

As India’s pre-owned car market evolves, the next phase of growth will depend on how effectively organised retailers combine transparent pricing, reliable vehicle assessments, convenient financing and digital services to meet changing customer expectations.
