Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and Rolls-Royce have announced their strategic intent to partner on the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of a sovereign indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.
The proposed partnership will also explore the establishment of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India, envisioned as a centre of excellence for advanced power and propulsion technologies.
The proposed collaboration brings together Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion and engine technology with Reliance’s industrial, technology, manufacturing and execution capabilities.
Building sovereign propulsion capability
The partnership is aimed at creating an end-to-end indigenous aerospace engine capability covering design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support.
Reliance and Rolls-Royce said the proposed collaboration would contribute to India’s objective of developing sovereign capabilities in critical defence technologies and reducing dependence on overseas sources for advanced propulsion systems.
The initiative is also aligned with the government’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision for defence technology indigenisation.
Reliance Industries Executive Director Anant Ambani, said India’s strategic autonomy required sovereign capabilities in critical technologies.
He said the proposed partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing scale and execution capabilities to build an indigenous aerospace engine ecosystem in India.
Ambani added that the companies aimed to create an enduring national capability that could eventually make India globally competitive in advanced propulsion technologies.
Rolls-Royce brings engine expertise
Rolls-Royce plc CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç said the proposed partnership would combine the company’s long-standing expertise in advanced engineering and engine technology with Reliance’s industrial capabilities in India.
He described the initiative as a major milestone towards building a robust and self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country.
The proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex could also provide a platform for wider collaboration across defence, civil aerospace and next-generation power and propulsion systems.
AMCA engine ecosystem
The proposed collaboration comes as India seeks to deepen domestic capabilities across the aerospace and defence value chain.
The Aero Gas Turbine Complex is envisaged to support the development of capabilities spanning the entire lifecycle of advanced propulsion systems, from design and development to manufacturing, testing, production and long-term support.
Reliance and Rolls-Royce said the initiative could help position India as a global hub for advanced propulsion technologies while creating opportunities for domestic manufacturing, engineering and technology development.
The proposed partnership is subject to the necessary discussions, approvals and other applicable processes. Its strategic intent marks another step towards developing an indigenous propulsion ecosystem for India’s next-generation fighter aircraft programme.
