India Optel Ltd (IOL), a Mini Ratna category-I defence public sector undertaking under the Department of Defence Production, has entered the civilian optics market with the launch of its indigenous ‘GARUD’ high resolution binoculars.
Developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, a unit of IOL, GARUD brings defence-grade optical technology to civilian users, reinforcing the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push in precision manufacturing.
The product was launched on August 13, 2026, in the presence of Dr Garima Bhagat, Joint Secretary (Land Systems), at DPSU Bhawan, New Delhi.
The launch marks IOL’s move to make optical capabilities developed for India’s defence forces available to a wider civilian market, including outdoor enthusiasts and professionals.
Defence-grade optics for civilian use
GARUD offers 8x magnification and a 7.6-degree field of view, allowing users to observe distant objects while maintaining a broad viewing perspective.
The binoculars feature ±5 diopter adjustment to accommodate individual eyesight, along with soft-touch eyecups designed for comfortable extended viewing. An ergonomic grip and weather-resistant construction are aimed at ensuring reliable use across a range of outdoor conditions.
Weighing around 610 grams, GARUD combines portability with a compact design and is positioned for applications ranging from birdwatching and wildlife observation to nature exploration, travel and sports.
The binoculars can also be used in forestry, marine activities and security-related applications.
From defence platforms to the civilian market
GARUD draws on a binocular platform that has served as a trusted optical tool for the Defence Forces and Central Armed Police Forces in demanding operational environments.
The product also builds on IOL’s long-standing expertise in precision optical manufacturing. The company’s optical manufacturing legacy dates back to 1943, providing a foundation for the development of indigenous optical products for defence applications.
By taking the technology into the civilian market, IOL is seeking to broaden the reach of capabilities developed over decades for India’s security forces.
Expanding indigenous optical manufacturing
The launch comes against the backdrop of India’s increasing focus on indigenous defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported equipment and technologies.
For IOL, the civilian launch provides an opportunity to leverage its established defence manufacturing capabilities in a new market while offering consumers access to an Indian-made optical product.
The launch event was attended by senior officials from the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Central Armed Police Forces and the Wildlife Society of India, besides members of IOL’s Board of Directors and senior company officials.
GARUD’s entry into the civilian market thus represents a new commercial application for India’s defence optical manufacturing ecosystem, taking a product platform proven in operational conditions to users across wildlife, travel, sports, nature and outdoor activities.
