Despite operating in a challenging business environment marked by demand volatility, import-led pricing pressures and shifting global trade dynamics, Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI) maintained a net debt-free standalone balance sheet and generated healthy free cash flow during FY26, underlining the resilience of its operating model.
In his message to shareholders in the company’s Annual Report 2026, CUMI Chairman M. M. Murugappan said disciplined capital allocation, prudent cost management and application-led solutions helped the company navigate market uncertainties while continuing to invest in future growth.
Exports drive resilience
Murugappan said exports remained a key contributor to CUMI’s growth during the year, supported by the company’s competitiveness across major product lines and its ability to serve diversified global markets.
He noted that continued investments in capacity expansion, technology upgrades, digitalisation and sustainability initiatives enhanced operational efficiency and strengthened the company’s ability to meet evolving customer requirements across geographies.
Portfolio optimisation gathers pace
As part of its disciplined capital allocation strategy, CUMI undertook a strategic review of select businesses to optimise its portfolio.
The company initiated the voluntary winding up of CUMI AWUKO Abrasives GmbH in Germany following a business review.
Murugappan also said Foskor Zirconia (Pty) Ltd. in South Africa is no longer in a position to continue operations after its management and board concluded that no viable commercial alternative currently exists. The shareholders are undertaking a strategic review, and the outcome will be announced in due course.
Investing for future growth
The chairman said the global business environment remained dynamic, influenced by geopolitical uncertainties, trade realignments and supply chain adjustments.
At the same time, rising demand for specialised, application-led materials from sectors such as manufacturing, energy, electronics and infrastructure is creating new growth opportunities.
In response, CUMI has continued strengthening its core businesses, investing in future-ready platforms and aligning its portfolio towards high-value applications.
Aspiration 2030 guides strategy
Murugappan said Aspiration 2030 remains the company’s long-term strategic roadmap.
The framework is built around seven pillars covering organisational performance, business growth, materials science and innovation, new growth platforms, manufacturing excellence, sales and marketing, and cross-functional initiatives including digital transformation and ESG.
He said the strategy is helping CUMI build a high-performance organisation while strengthening governance, execution capabilities and its focus on specialised materials and global markets.
