Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) will host its Convocation 2026 on September 19 and 20, with 2,701 graduating students set to receive their degrees.
The two-day convocation will bring together leaders from national security, defence, technology and industry, highlighting the institute’s focus on academic excellence, research, innovation and national development.
Two-day convocation
The first day, September 19, will be dedicated to undergraduate students. Ajit Kumar Doval, National Security Advisor of India, will be the Chief Guest and deliver the Convocation Address.
General N. S. Raja Subramani, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, Chief of Defence Staff of India and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, will attend as the Guest of Honour.
The second day, September 20, will be dedicated to postgraduate and Ph.D. students. Harshavardhan Chitale, Chief Executive Officer of Hero MotoCorp, will be the Chief Guest and deliver the address.
Dr. Kapil Garg, Founder and Managing Director of Oilmax Energy Pvt. Ltd. and Managing Director of Asian Energy Services Ltd., will be the Guest of Honour.
Adv. Harish Salve, former Solicitor General of India and Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Roorkee, will preside over the convocation ceremony.
Focus on innovation and national development
The line-up of guests reflects the broad range of opportunities and responsibilities awaiting the graduating students, while highlighting the links between education, research, innovation, national priorities and industry.
IIT Roorkee Director Prof. K.K. Pant said the convocation represents a significant milestone for the graduating students and the institute community.
“Convocation is a significant milestone in the journey of our students and a moment of pride for the entire IIT Roorkee community. This year, as we confer degrees upon 2,701 students, we celebrate not only their academic accomplishments but also their spirit of innovation, research and service to society,” he said.
He added that the presence of leaders from national security, defence and industry reflects the diverse impact and relevance of the institute’s academic and research ecosystem.
Institute highlights graduate contributions
IIT Roorkee, Deputy Director Prof. Praveen Kumar and Dean of Academic Affairs Prof. N.K. Navani also addressed the media.
Prof. Praveen Kumar, said, ‘Convocation is a celebration of the hard work, perseverance and achievements of our graduating students. It is also an occasion that brings together the Institute’s students, faculty, alumni, parents and stakeholders.’”
He said the institute expects its graduates to carry forward the values of excellence, integrity and innovation nurtured at IIT Roorkee and contribute to the nation and society.
Prof. N.K. Navani, said, ‘The Convocation marks the culmination of years of learning, exploration and personal growth for our students. At IIT Roorkee, education goes beyond the classroom, encouraging students to think critically, pursue research and innovation, and address real-world challenges.’”
He said the institute looks forward to seeing the 2,701 graduates create a positive impact in their chosen fields.
Convocation video launched
During the press conference, Prof. K.K. Pant launched a promotional video for Convocation 2026. The video highlights details of the two-day event, along with the achievements of IIT Roorkee and its graduating students.
The convocation will bring together students, faculty, alumni, families and other members of the IIT Roorkee community for the formal completion of the graduating students’ academic journey.
