Amazon India Expands EV Logistics With 1,000 Eicher Electric Trucks

CW Bureau ·

E-commerce major Amazon India is set to deploy around 1,000 electric trucks, developed in collaboration with Eicher Trucks and Buses, a business division of VE Commercial Vehicles, to strengthen the operations of Amazon Now across the country.

The deployment is expected to become one of India’s largest dedicated electric truck fleets in the e-commerce and quick commerce sectors, further reinforcing Amazon’s efforts to build a more sustainable transportation network.

Purpose-built electric trucks
As part of the collaboration, VECV has developed the Eicher Pro-X small truck, a compact electric vehicle specifically designed for high-frequency intra-city operations. The trucks will transport goods between Amazon fulfilment hubs, typically located on city outskirts, and Amazon Now micro-fulfilment centres positioned closer to customers.

Amazon has already deployed nearly 50 of these electric trucks and plans to scale the fleet to over 1,000 vehicles by 2028.

Fast-charging fleet for quick commerce
In daily operations, the electric trucks are expected to cover 100–180 km while supporting multiple trips between facilities. The vehicles can be fast-charged in nearly 50 minutes, making them suitable for quick commerce logistics.

The fleet rollout will begin across Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Mumbai, supporting the rapid expansion of Amazon Now, which delivers thousands of everyday essentials — ranging from groceries and personal care products to electronic accessories and festive supplies — within minutes.

Amazon Now expansion plans
The company recently announced plans to expand Amazon Now to 100 cities across India and scale its network to more than 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres (MFCs). The expansion will bring the ultra-fast delivery service to customers in cities including Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Mangalore and Vizag.

Executive comments
Amazon India Vice President – Operations Abhinav Singh said, “We have always focused on making our operations more sustainable and have steadily expanded our electric mobility efforts, with over 12,000 EVs already deployed across India. We work closely with multiple OEM partners to build solutions suited to our needs, and are integrating electric transportation more deeply as we grow. The planned deployment of 1,000 purpose-built Volvo Eicher electric trucks is yet another step in that direction.”

VE Commercial Vehicles Chief Commercial Officer SS Gill said, “The deployment of Eicher Pro X electric trucks marks a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable mobility. What makes this even more meaningful is that the electric small truck from Eicher has been co-created in close collaboration with Amazon, with a sharp focus on addressing their specific operational needs for e-commerce and quick commerce operations. This partnership-led approach ensures that we are not only delivering electric vehicles, but also enabling efficient, reliable, and scalable logistics solutions.”

Long-term collaboration
Amazon and VECV have been working together since 2022 to develop electric trucks tailored for e-commerce operations in India. In 2025, Amazon deployed over 100 electric trucks with multiple automakers across cities such as Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata as part of its broader efforts to decarbonise transportation while improving speed and operational efficiency.
