Ashok Kumar Panda has assumed charge as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), taking over leadership of the state-owned steel major at a time when the company is preparing for its next phase of expansion and value-driven growth. Prior to this appointment, Panda served as Director (Finance) and also held the additional charge of Director (Commercial) for nearly nine months.
From management trainee to CMD
Panda joined SAIL in 1992 as a management trainee (technical) after completing his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks, handling critical assignments across multiple plants and business units of the company.
His career trajectory reflects deep operational understanding combined with financial and commercial expertise, a combination seen as crucial for steering SAIL through its next growth phase.
Driving profitability and operational efficiency
During his tenure as Director (Finance), Panda led several strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening profitability and improving operational efficiency.
These included technical interventions to boost productivity, enrichment of the product basket to improve margins and policy revamps across Operations, Sales & Marketing, Human Resources and Finance.
As Director (Commercial), he focused on improving volumes, enhancing Net Sales Realisation (NSR), reducing inventory levels and strengthening brand positioning for SAIL’s products in the market.
The leadership stint also helped sharpen coordination between operations and market demand — a key area for large integrated steel producers navigating volatile commodity cycles.
Expansion to 35 MTPA on the radar
Speaking after assuming charge as CMD, Panda outlined SAIL’s immediate priorities, placing capacity expansion and raw material security at the centre of the company’s strategy.
“SAIL is on track for its next phase of capacity expansion to 35 MTPA. Alongside expansion, we will continue to place the highest priority on safety across all our workplaces,” Panda said.
He also highlighted the need to strengthen raw material security through enhanced domestic mining and exploration of overseas assets to support the company’s long-term growth ambitions.
Focus on brand and value-added products
Beyond expansion, Panda signalled a sharper market-focused approach with increased emphasis on value-added products and brand strengthening.
The strategy aligns with broader industry trends where steelmakers are increasingly focusing on specialised and higher-margin products catering to sectors such as infrastructure, automotive, railways and engineering.
Panda said the company remains committed to expanding market reach, improving customer connect and delivering sustained value creation for stakeholders.
