Renault Says Chennai Plant Is Fully Owned By It Since September 2025

CW Bureau ·

Renault Group has clarified that its manufacturing facility in Chennai, which produces vehicles for both Renault and Nissan, has been fully owned by Renault Group since September 2025, urging stakeholders and the media to avoid referring to it as the “Nissan plant” or “Nissan factory”.

The French automaker said such references are no longer factually accurate, as the Chennai facility is now a Renault-owned manufacturing plant that continues to build vehicles for both Renault and Nissan for domestic and export markets.

The company said the clarification is intended to ensure accurate references in future communications, reports and media coverage.

A key manufacturing hub
Located at Oragadam near Chennai, the manufacturing facility has been one of India’s important automobile production hubs since it commenced operations under the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The plant has played a significant role in catering to both domestic demand and export markets, supplying vehicles to several international destinations.

The ownership structure changed in September 2025, when Renault Group completed the acquisition of Nissan’s 51% stake in the former Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt. Ltd. (RNAIPL), making the Chennai facility a wholly owned Renault manufacturing operation. While ownership has changed, the plant continues to manufacture vehicles for both alliance partners under agreed production arrangements.

The facility remains central to Renault’s manufacturing and export strategy in India, backed by a strong localisation programme and an established supplier ecosystem in Tamil Nadu.

Supports Renault’s India growth plans
Renault said the Chennai manufacturing site continues to be a key pillar of its India operations and supports the company’s long-term ambitions in the country.

The company added that the plant will play an important role in driving future growth through localisation, manufacturing efficiency and exports, while continuing to produce vehicles for both Renault and Nissan brands.

The clarification comes as Renault accelerates its India strategy with plans to strengthen its product portfolio and expand its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets.
