Spiro, Africa’s leading electric mobility company, has appointed Anant Badjatya as its Group Chief Executive Officer, strengthening its leadership team as it accelerates expansion across the continent’s fast-growing electric mobility sector.
The appointment comes shortly after Spiro secured a landmark $215 million financing round, one of the largest investments in Africa’s electric mobility industry, positioning the company for its next phase of growth.
Seasoned industry leader joins
Badjatya brings more than two decades of leadership experience spanning India, West Asia and Africa across the electric mobility, energy and industrial sectors.
Prior to joining Spiro, he served as CEO of Indofast Energy, the joint venture between IndianOil and SUN Mobility, where he led the development of one of India’s largest battery-swapping networks. The network comprises over 1,800 battery-swapping stations and serves nearly 90,000 vehicles daily.
At Spiro, his responsibilities will extend across battery swapping, leasing, logistics, energy and vehicle manufacturing businesses.
Focus on Africa expansion
The company said the appointment comes at a pivotal stage in its journey as it seeks to expand access to clean, affordable and accessible transportation solutions across Africa.
Meanwhile, Kaushik Burman, CEO Mobility, will continue to strengthen Spiro’s market leadership and fleet operations across its seven existing markets and future expansion territories.
India technology hubs to scale up
Under Badjatya’s leadership, Spiro plans to significantly strengthen its technology presence in India through its innovation centres in Pune and Bengaluru.
The Pune facility, which currently employs around 100 professionals, serves as the company’s automotive innovation hub and is expected to expand further, creating high-value jobs in areas such as EV powertrain development and battery management systems (BMS).
The Bengaluru centre, with a workforce of around 50 employees, will continue to focus on IoT-enabled cloud platforms while supporting research and development localisation initiatives in Kenya and Nigeria.
Strategic initiatives
Spiro Founder and Chairman Gagan Gupta, said, “As Spiro is accelerating on its mission to transform mobility across Africa through clean, affordable and accessible electric transportation solutions, Anant will consolidate the Group’s strategic initiatives and guide the company through its next chapter of growth and execution in mobility, energy and tech.”
New CEO outlines vision
Spiro Group CEO Anant Badjatya said, “Africa represents the most exciting frontier for electric mobility. Spiro has built a unique platform and is exceptionally well positioned to accelerate the transition to cleaner and more accessible mobility across the continent.”
