InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ luxury and lifestyle portfolio, has completed the final phase of its multi-million-dollar transformation, introducing new luxury accommodations, dining concepts, wellness experiences and a large ocean-facing event venue.
Located along the East Coast Road near Mahabalipuram, the reimagined beachfront resort aims to strengthen its position as a premium leisure, wedding and events destination on the Coromandel Coast.
New offerings unveiled
Spread across 15 acres of landscaped beachfront, the resort now features an ocean-facing ballroom, expansive beach lawns, luxury suites with private plunge pools, new restaurants and bars, a sports pavilion, walking trails and a meditation garden.
The property offers 110 redesigned guestrooms and suites overlooking the Bay of Bengal, landscaped gardens and pool areas. Premium accommodation options include the Grand Presidential Suite with a jacuzzi and steam room, the Presidential Suite with a private pool and spa room, and the Rathi Suite featuring a plunge pool and steam room.
IHG Hotels & Resorts Managing Director South West Asia, Sudeep Jain, said: “The reopening of InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort marks an important milestone for our luxury portfolio in India. This multi-million-dollar transformation reflects our commitment to delivering destination-led, experience-rich stays that combine world-class hospitality with a strong sense of place. We are excited to welcome guests back to a reimagined resort that sets a new benchmark for mindful luxury on the Coromandel Coast.”
Focus on celebrations and events
A key highlight of the transformation is the addition of the sea-facing Vaibhava Ballroom, spanning more than 12,000 sq. ft. The ballroom, together with the 70,000 sq. ft. Vaibhava & Beach Lawns, can accommodate more than 5,000 guests, positioning the resort as a major venue for weddings, corporate events and large-scale celebrations.
Expanded culinary experiences
The resort has also refreshed its food and beverage offerings. The Melting Pot serves Indian, Western and Pan-Asian cuisine through interactive kitchens, while KoKoMMo Tiki Shack offers beachfront dining and cocktails. Tao of Peng specialises in Hunan and Cantonese cuisine, while Viora Sky Lounge provides rooftop dining with panoramic coastal views. The Gatsby Lounge has been introduced as a sports lounge featuring live match screenings and private gathering spaces.
Wellness and recreation at the core
The revamped property places a strong emphasis on wellness and outdoor experiences. Facilities include Amrtam Spa, a fitness centre, meditation gardens, nature trails, a pickleball court, multipurpose sports areas and an ATV trail. Guests can also participate in beachside yoga and sunrise meditation sessions.
Family-focused amenities include Planet Trekkers, dedicated outdoor play areas and wellness-oriented experiences such as a herbal garden and juice bar.
Strengthening luxury hospitality footprint
The resort’s transformation aligns with IHG Hotels & Resorts’ strategy of expanding its luxury and lifestyle portfolio in India amid growing demand for destination-led travel experiences that blend leisure, celebrations and business travel.
InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort General Manager, Anand Nair, said: “This relaunch marks a proud milestone for us, unveiling a truly transformed resort. Envisioned as a coastal icon reimagined, it brings together the richness of South Indian culture with modern luxury. Every space tells a story and each experience is thoughtfully curated to offer guests a more personal and elevated stay. Our ambition is to position the resort not merely as a place to stay, but as a destination in its own right.”
