Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. has secured a ₹5,301-crore contract from Vadhvan Port Project Ltd. (VPPL) for the construction of a 10.14-km-long breakwater at the upcoming Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra.

The breakwater, once completed, will be the second longest in the world and will form a critical component of the greenfield port project being developed on India’s west coast.

Major port project

Vadhvan Port is envisaged as India’s largest public port and one of the world’s biggest container ports, with a planned handling capacity of 23.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

The project is expected to strengthen India’s position in global trade and support the country’s long-term maritime and logistics ambitions.

Global maritime hub

“The Vadhvan breakwater project will be a strategic enabler for India’s ambition to become a global maritime hub,” Afcons Infrastructure Executive Chairman Krishnamurthy Subramanian said.

“This project showcases India’s growing expertise in executing complex infrastructure on a global scale. We are confident that the successful completion of this project will further strengthen our Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat,” Afcons Infrastructure Managing Director S. Paramasivan said.

Marine expertise

Afcons has executed several landmark marine infrastructure projects in India and overseas. Its international portfolio includes the Bulk Jetty at Port of Sohar in Oman, the New Owendo International Port in Gabon and the Sulphur Jetty project in Kuwait.

The company has been recognised by Engineering News-Record (ENR), U.S., as the world’s eighth-largest marine and port facilities contractor.
