Indore’s urban mobility network has received a major boost with the inauguration of the Indore Metro Priority Corridor–2, expanding the city’s operational metro network to approximately 17 km across 16 stations.
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, inaugurated the Phase-I (Reach-II) corridor. Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu was also present at the occasion.
The newly inaugurated stretch covers approximately 11 km and comprises 11 stations between Super Corridor-3 and Malviya Nagar Chauraha. It has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹2,850 crore.
With the addition of the new corridor, the Indore Metro network now has 16 operational stations covering around 17 km. The cumulative project cost of the operational network stands at approximately ₹4,370 crore.
Boost to urban connectivity
Manohar Lal said the metro would provide citizens with a faster, safer, more comfortable and reliable mode of public transport while improving connectivity between residential, commercial and employment centres.
The Union Minister said Metro Rail should not be viewed merely as a transportation project, but as an instrument for economic growth, urban transformation and social inclusion.
He also highlighted the environmental and traffic benefits of greater public transport adoption, noting that increased use of metro services can help reduce congestion, fuel consumption and emissions.
Manohar Lal congratulated the Government of Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, officials, engineers, workers and other stakeholders involved in the project.
The expansion marks another step in Indore’s efforts to develop a more integrated and sustainable urban transport system, while strengthening connectivity across key residential and economic centres of the city.
