JSW Greentech, the electric commercial vehicle arm of the JSW Group, has secured its first commercial order for 100 AMPSTAR electric tractor trucks from JSW Cement for heavy-duty industrial transportation, marking the transition of its newly launched electric truck brand to commercial deployment.
The order covers AMPSTAR 4×2 55-tonne tractor trucks, which will transport clinker and slag along an approximately 330-km corridor between Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh and Vijaynagar in Karnataka. The fleet is expected to handle an estimated 1.25 lakh tonnes of cargo every month.
The deployment will be supported by JSW Eco-Mobility, a subsidiary of JSW Greentech, as the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) provider, and Paradeep Parivahan Ltd as the logistics partner.
The commercial order comes a little over a month after AMPSTAR was unveiled. The AMPSTAR 4×2 and 6×4 tractor trucks have also received certification under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), clearing the regulatory requirements for deployment on Indian roads.
Electric freight corridor with battery swapping
The project will combine electric trucks, battery-swapping infrastructure and logistics operations to support heavy-duty freight movement.
JSW Eco-Mobility will power the fleet and develop a dedicated electric logistics corridor between Nandyal and Vijaynagar, supported by four battery-swapping stations. The infrastructure is intended to facilitate vehicle operations and reduce the downtime associated with battery charging.
The integrated model is designed to address the operational requirements of industrial transportation, where vehicle utilisation, turnaround time and energy costs are critical to commercial viability.
Over the contract period, the operation is expected to save approximately 4.5 crore litres of diesel and avoid around 6,250 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
“The 55T electric tractor truck, first showcased at our AMPSTAR brand launch, represents one of the most demanding vehicle architectures in commercial transportation. In just over a month, we have reached a significant milestone, with the first 100 trucks being deployed for JSW Cement’s industrial freight movement, supported by JSW Eco-Mobility as Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) partner,” said JSW Greentech CEO, Sumit Mittal.
He said the deployment would bring together an integrated electric mobility ecosystem, including a dedicated corridor and battery-swapping stations, to make heavy-duty electric transportation commercially viable.
430 kW power output
The AMPSTAR 4×2 55-tonne tractor truck is designed for demanding commercial operating conditions in India. It delivers peak power of 430 kW and peak torque of 2,600 Nm.
The trucks will be deployed for transporting clinker and slag, two key materials used in cement production, supporting JSW Cement’s industrial supply chain.
Narinder Kahlon, Director Finance, JSW Cement, said the deployment would help the company reduce its dependence on diesel and lower emissions while maintaining operational efficiency.
The project forms part of the cement manufacturer’s efforts to improve the sustainability of its logistics operations through electric mobility and supporting infrastructure.
Manufacturing capacity of 15,000 vehicles
JSW Greentech plans to manufacture AMPSTAR vehicles at its integrated greenfield facility being developed across approximately 90 acres at AURIC in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
The facility is planned to have an annual production capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks. It will include an automated truck-cabin production line and an integrated battery ecosystem, supported by the company’s research and development centre in Pune.
AMPSTAR’s product portfolio offers power configurations ranging from 150 kW to 500 kW. Customers can choose from outright purchases, leasing, Battery-as-a-Service and other ownership and operating models. The company also offers charging infrastructure, financing and after-sales support.
Following the introduction of tractor trucks, JSW Greentech plans to expand the range to include tippers and fixed-body dumpers.
The first commercial order provides an initial deployment base for AMPSTAR in industrial freight transportation, a segment where the economics of electric trucks will depend on vehicle utilisation, energy costs, battery infrastructure and the ability to maintain reliable operations over long distances.
