India Post has taken a significant step towards modernising postal logistics with the launch of drone-based transmission of mail and parcels between Mandi head post office and Rehardhar branch post office in Himachal Pradesh.
The service became operational on June 12, 2026, marking the first route under the Department of Posts’ broader plan to deploy drone-based mail transportation across around 150 identified routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the next two to three months.
Faster connectivity for remote regions
Rehardhar Branch Post Office is located approximately 12 kilometres from Mandi Head Post Office. Under conventional transport arrangements, mail delivery between the two locations takes more than two hours due to the challenging mountainous terrain. The newly introduced drone service has reduced the transit time to about seven minutes.
The initiative is aimed at overcoming geographical barriers that often impact service delivery in remote and hilly regions. By significantly reducing transportation time, India Post expects to improve operational efficiency and ensure quicker delivery of mail and parcels to local communities.
Technology-driven postal transformation
According to the Department of Posts, the drone-based system enables real-time tracking of consignments while offering an environmentally sustainable mode of transportation. The technology-driven approach is expected to strengthen connectivity in remote areas and improve access to essential postal services.
The initiative is also expected to support greater social and economic inclusion by enhancing communication and logistics infrastructure in underserved regions.
Expansion plans underway
The Mandi-Rehardhar route serves as a pilot for a larger drone delivery network planned across Himachal Pradesh and Assam. India Post has identified nearly 150 routes for deployment, reflecting the government’s focus on leveraging emerging technologies to improve public service delivery.
The expansion is expected to accelerate postal operations in difficult-to-access locations while supporting the broader objective of digital and logistical transformation across the country.
Minister highlights grassroots-driven innovation
Announcing the launch through a post on X, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia said the initiative would dramatically improve delivery efficiency in challenging terrains.
He noted that a journey that previously took hours can now be completed in just seven minutes with real-time tracking capabilities. Scindia also highlighted that the idea emerged from feedback received from Gramin Dak Sevaks and postal assistants during interactions with postal staff, underscoring the role of grassroots inputs in shaping innovation within the postal network.
The launch represents another milestone in India’s efforts to integrate advanced technologies into public services while improving connectivity for citizens living in remote and mountainous regions.
