Tata Communications, Tata Motors Partner For 5G Network In Sierra.ev

CW Bureau ·

Tata Communications and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) have announced a collaboration to power the newly launched Sierra.ev with built-in 5G cellular connectivity, supporting the development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

Under the collaboration, Tata Communications MOVE’s connected vehicle platform will be integrated with Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ new SDV platform, N.IO. The integration is aimed at delivering seamless connectivity and digital-first in-vehicle experiences while making the vehicle scalable for advanced connected capabilities and AI-enabled applications.

Building a connected vehicle ecosystem
The integration of Tata Communications MOVE is designed to enhance the Sierra.ev’s safety features and digital experience. The platform will support a smoother vehicle onboarding process and secure in-vehicle connectivity for content streaming.

The technology will also enable faster over-the-air (OTA) updates, allowing vehicle software and features to be updated remotely. Customers will have the option to purchase additional connectivity subscription packs, potentially expanding the range of connected services available during the vehicle’s lifecycle.

At the same time, safety-critical functions such as emergency calls, remote support and real-time remote vehicle diagnostics will be supported through the connected platform.

The companies said the technology architecture is designed to make vehicles more future-ready by enabling them to accommodate evolving connected vehicle capabilities and AI-driven applications.

Digital backbone for software-defined vehicles
Tata Communications, Executive Vice President, Interaction Fabric, Vivek Manglik, said the collaboration reflects a shared focus on creating a smarter mobility experience.

He said vehicles are evolving into intelligent ecosystems capable of supporting an expanding range of services and applications, making the underlying digital infrastructure critical to innovation and scalability.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., Chief Technology Officer, Sven Patuschka, said digital connectivity and services would increasingly shape customer experiences as vehicles become more software-defined.

He said the Sierra.ev represents an important step in this evolution and that the collaboration with Tata Communications would provide the digital backbone required for seamless connectivity, continuous innovation and enhanced in-vehicle experiences.

Moving towards software-defined mobility
The partnership highlights the growing role of telecommunications and connected technology in the automotive sector. By integrating 5G connectivity with the vehicle’s software architecture, the Sierra.ev is positioned to support services that can evolve beyond the vehicle’s initial capabilities.

The integration of connectivity, OTA updates, diagnostics, emergency services and subscription-based features could also enable automakers to introduce new digital experiences throughout a vehicle’s lifecycle.

For Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, the collaboration strengthens the technology foundation of its Sierra.ev as the company expands its focus on connected and software-defined mobility.
