Athulya Senior Care, India’s largest senior care operator, has opened its first exclusive hospital for senior citizens in Chennai, strengthening its integrated elder care ecosystem spanning hospital care, assisted living and home care.
The 60-bed Athulya Geriatric Care Hospital at Valasaravakkam was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar.
The facility offers specialised geriatric healthcare through more than 20 doctors across 10 disciplines and six Centres of Excellence.
Addressing a growing need
“The launch comes at a critical inflection point as India’s elderly population is projected to reach 193.4 million by 2031. Yet, the country’s geriatric healthcare infrastructure continues to lag behind,” Athulya Senior Care Founder and Managing Director Karthik Narayan said.
He noted that India requires at least four lakh senior care beds, while only about 20,000 are currently available. The organised sector accounts for fewer than 4,500 senior care units across the country.
Tamil Nadu alone has around 10 million people above the age of 55, a figure that makes the gap in specialised geriatric healthcare infrastructure impossible to ignore, he said.
Comprehensive care model
“Elderly individuals often require healthcare systems that go beyond episodic treatment. This hospital has been designed to address those needs comprehensively while preserving the dignity and quality of life of every senior we serve,” Athulya Senior Care Founder and Chief Executive Officer G. Srinivasan said.
The company said the new hospital completes its continuum of senior care services and comes at a time when India’s ageing population is driving demand for specialised healthcare infrastructure focused exclusively on the needs of elderly patients.
The six CoEs are Geriatric Intensive Care, Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, General and Laparoscopic surgery, Neurology, Urology and Psychiatry.
