L&T Entity Wins Mega Order In West Asia To Develop Three BESS Projects

Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) renewables business has secured a major order from a prominent client in West Asia to develop three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, strengthening its presence in the rapidly expanding energy storage market in the West Asia.

L&T classifies major orders as those valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore.

The three projects will collectively provide 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage capacity, marking a significant addition to the region’s grid modernisation and renewable energy integration efforts.

Supporting renewable energy integration
Each project will feature a four-hour BESS capable of storing and dispatching electricity to support grid stability and the integration of renewable energy.

The systems will enable energy shifting by storing surplus clean power generated during periods of lower demand and supplying it during peak demand hours. This can help improve grid flexibility while enabling greater utilisation of renewable energy.

In addition to the storage facilities, L&T’s scope includes grid interconnection infrastructure such as pooling substations and underground cables.

Advanced battery storage technology
The BESS projects will deploy liquid-cooling technology, which is designed to support higher power density, improved safety and longer operational life.

The projects will involve stringent requirements covering plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality and execution timelines. L&T said the order reflects the confidence of its clients in its engineering capabilities and project management expertise.

L&T strengthens West Asia energy storage play
The order positions L&T as a significant engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) player in the fast-growing energy storage sector.

With renewable energy capacity expanding across the West Asia, large-scale battery storage is emerging as a critical component of modern power systems. BESS facilities can help address the intermittent nature of renewable generation by storing electricity when supply is available and releasing it when demand rises.

The latest order expands L&T’s participation in this transition while adding to its international renewables portfolio. The company’s involvement in both storage systems and associated grid infrastructure gives it a broader role in developing integrated energy infrastructure in the region.
