Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a Semiconductor Roundtable with leading global and Indian semiconductor CEOs at Seva Teerth, calling for closer government-industry collaboration as India moves towards the next phase of semiconductor growth.
The meeting focused on strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem, expanding capabilities across the value chain and increasing industry participation in skilling, innovation and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
Focus on talent and emerging technologies
Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s growing foundation of talent, technology adoption and infrastructure and called on the semiconductor industry to play a larger role in developing skills and fostering innovation.
Referring to India’s target of training one crore people in AI, he said the country’s large talent pool, combined with the experience and capabilities of global industry leaders, could create significant opportunities.
The Prime Minister also said India should aspire to be among the early leaders in emerging technologies.
He noted that the semiconductor sector had made significant progress and was now moving from foundational efforts towards a phase of greater scale and opportunity.
Government seeks industry inputs on policy
Modi reiterated the Government’s commitment to maintaining a predictable and responsive policy environment for the semiconductor industry.
He stressed that policies would need to evolve in line with technological developments and changing industry requirements. The Prime Minister invited industry leaders to share suggestions on policy and administrative measures to further strengthen the sector.
He also called on companies to actively participate in the next phase of India’s semiconductor growth.
CEOs back India’s semiconductor ambitions
The CEOs and industry representatives appreciated the Government’s sustained efforts to build India’s semiconductor capabilities, citing progress in manufacturing, chip design, infrastructure and talent development.
The industry leaders expressed confidence in the opportunities emerging under India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 (ISM 2.0) and in India’s ability to develop capabilities across the semiconductor value chain.
These include semiconductor manufacturing, research and development, advanced technologies and supporting industries.
The industry representatives also expressed their commitment to contributing to India’s emergence as a globally competitive semiconductor and technology hub.
Global semiconductor majors participate
The roundtable brought together senior representatives from several major global and Indian semiconductor and technology companies and industry organisations.
Participants included SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron, Fujifilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semiconductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power and IBM Research, among others.
The participation of companies spanning equipment, materials, chip design, manufacturing, research and supporting technologies underlined the breadth of India’s semiconductor ambitions.
The discussions come as India seeks to build a broader semiconductor ecosystem that can support domestic demand while integrating Indian companies more deeply into global technology and manufacturing value chains.
