The ₹521-Cr Kazipet Rail Unit To Roll Out 200 Intercity Trains In Five Years

CW Bureau ·

Indian Railways’ upcoming ₹521.36-crore rail manufacturing unit at Kazipet in Hanumakonda district of Telangana, which is nearing completion, will manufacture 200 intercity trains over the next five years for short-distance passenger travel across the country.

The trains are being designed as affordable intercity mobility solutions connecting adjacent towns and cities with frequent stops, enabling easier daily travel for work, healthcare and other commuting needs.

Focus on affordable and green mobility

The proposed intercity trains will typically operate over distances of around 300 km and are expected to function like shuttle services across regional corridors.

Railways expects the introduction of these trains to shift a sizeable portion of local passenger traffic from roads to railways, supporting cleaner and more energy-efficient transportation.

The trains will feature modern passenger amenities including automatic door-closing systems, superior ventilation and safer coach designs. Each train will have a 20-coach configuration with two toilets in every coach, one at each end.

The coaches will also be equipped with modern jerk-free couplers and advanced bogies designed for smoother travel experience.

Designed for energy efficiency

According to Indian Railways, the trains are being designed to operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph.

The trains will also feature regenerative braking technology, under which braking energy is converted into electricity and fed back into the power grid, improving overall energy efficiency.

Railways said the new fleet would significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to road-based transport and strengthen the country’s green mobility infrastructure.

The large-scale deployment of these trains is expected to enhance clean transport capacity nationwide while improving regional rail connectivity.
