The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first commercial export consignment of fresh mangoes from Jharkhand to the United Kingdom, opening new international market opportunities for local farmers.
The consignment, flagged off in Kolkata on June 4, comprises 1.5 metric tonnes of fresh Amrapali mangoes sourced from Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd., an all-women Farmer Producer Company (FPC) based in Bano Block of Simdega district. The shipment is being exported by Kolkata-based JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. to London.
Capacity-building initiative leads to export breakthrough
The export is the outcome of an export-oriented capacity-building programme conducted by APEDA on May 5, 2026, for Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and progressive farmers in Simdega district.
The programme focused on export procedures, quality standards and global market opportunities for agricultural produce. Following the training, APEDA facilitated a business linkage between Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd. and JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. for procurement of export-quality mangoes from the region.
The initiative enabled the women-led FPC to directly participate in the export value chain and gain access to international markets.
Higher returns for farmers
According to APEDA, the export linkage has helped member farmers secure better returns for their produce compared to prevailing domestic market prices.
The authority said the development is expected to encourage farmers to adopt quality-focused cultivation methods, improve post-harvest management practices and strengthen compliance with international food safety and quality standards.
The successful shipment is also expected to create greater awareness among farmer groups about export opportunities and value-added market access.
Expanding Jharkhand’s horticulture potential
Jharkhand’s favourable agro-climatic conditions make it suitable for horticultural cultivation, with the Amrapali mango variety enjoying strong consumer acceptance due to its taste and quality characteristics.
With the latest shipment, Jharkhand has joined the growing list of Indian states exporting fresh fruits to international markets, marking a significant milestone in the state’s agricultural export journey.
Strengthening farmer participation in exports
APEDA continues to support agricultural exports through market development initiatives, quality enhancement programmes, traceability systems and export promotion activities.
The authority has also been actively encouraging participation of farmer collectives, including women-led and tribal producer organisations, in export-oriented agriculture to improve rural incomes and strengthen integration with global value chains.
The export of the first commercial mango consignment from Jharkhand is expected to pave the way for increased international market access for the state’s farmer producer organisations and further expansion of horticulture exports in the coming years.
