OHM Global Mobility (OHM), the e-mobility solutions arm of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, has expanded its electric bus operations in Chennai with the launch of 130 new air-conditioned electric buses under Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s (MTC) electric bus programme.
The new buses were flagged off by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in the presence of Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Transport Secretary Nirmal Raj, IAS, MTC Managing Director D Mohan, IAS, and senior officials from OHM Global Mobility.
The latest deployment marks the first batch of buses under OHM’s Phase 2 programme and is aimed at expanding Chennai’s electric public transport network while offering commuters a quieter and more comfortable travel experience.
Phase 2 to add 500 electric buses
Under the MTC Phase 2 programme, OHM will supply and operate 500 electric buses manufactured by Switch, the electric vehicle subsidiary of Ashok Leyland.
The 130 buses launched now represent the first tranche of this larger deployment. The rollout will further increase the presence of electric buses across Chennai as the city seeks to transition its public transport fleet towards cleaner mobility.
The Phase 2 expansion builds on OHM’s experience with its first-stage electric bus operations in Chennai.
