Ducati has priced its exclusive Formula 73 motorcycle at ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom) in India, with the entire allocation for the Indian market sold out. The Italian premium motorcycle manufacturer will produce only 873 numbered units of the limited-edition model globally.
Launched in Ducati’s centenary year, the Formula 73 combines retro styling inspired by the iconic 1973 Ducati 750 Super Sport Desmo with modern engineering and electronic rider aids. The motorcycle is aimed at enthusiasts and collectors seeking a blend of Italian design heritage and contemporary performance.
Tribute to Ducati’s racing legacy
The Formula 73 draws inspiration from the 750 Super Sport Desmo, the first Ducati road motorcycle equipped with a desmodromic valve timing system.
The original model was developed following the success of Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari at the 1972 200 Miglia di Imola race on the 750 Imola Desmo. The victory marked a defining moment in Ducati’s production-derived racing history, which has since delivered more than 400 world championship race victories, 16 riders’ titles and 21 manufacturers’ titles.
The new motorcycle reinterprets the original’s design through a contemporary Urban Café Racer format, retaining distinctive styling cues while incorporating modern technology.
Retro design with modern engineering
The Formula 73 features silver and aqua-green bodywork inspired by the original 750 Super Sport Desmo. A vertical gold stripe on the fuel tank references the unpainted strip used on the original racing motorcycle to monitor fuel levels.
Clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, a short front fairing and a tapered tail reinforce its Café Racer character. Billet aluminium components, including the brake and clutch levers, footpegs and a Rizoma fuel cap, add to its premium positioning.
Each motorcycle carries its model name and individual serial number on the steering plate. Buyers also receive a certificate of authenticity, along with archival photographs and design sketches from the Ducati Style Centre.
803 cc engine develops 73 hp
Power comes from an 803 cc, air-cooled L-twin Desmodue engine with a two-valve desmodromic distribution system. The Euro 5+ compliant engine produces 73 hp at 8,250 rpm.
A Termignoni exhaust system has been developed specifically for the motorcycle, while ride-by-wire throttle technology is designed to deliver progressive engine response.
The steel trellis frame, finished in aqua green, is paired with 17-inch spoked wheels and Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres. Electronic features include Ducati Traction Control, Cornering ABS, Ducati Quick Shift and two riding modes.
Ducati India allocation sold out
Ducati India said its limited allocation of the Formula 73 had sold out, and the motorcycle was no longer available for new bookings in the country.
“The Formula 73 is a rolling masterpiece that pays homage to one of the most significant motorcycles in our history, the 1973 750 Super Sport Desmo,” said Ducati India Managing Director Bipul Chandra. He said the company was proud to secure an exclusive allocation for Indian enthusiasts, offering collectors an opportunity to own a motorcycle that combines Italian heritage with modern Ducati performance.
The Formula 73 also features in A Piece of Timeless, a short film starring Italian actor Stefano Accorsi, who reflects on his first experience riding the motorcycle.
