Samsung India has supported 200 women from villages around its Sriperumbudur manufacturing facility with tailoring and entrepreneurship training aimed at helping them build independent livelihoods.
The women, 100 each from Santhavallur and Sirumangadu, received tailoring certifications and pedal sewing machines after completing a two-month skills and entrepreneurship programme.
The sewing machines are expected to enable the participants to take tailoring orders from their homes, supplement household incomes or explore setting up small tailoring businesses in their communities.
Skills training focused on livelihoods
Launched in May, the programme provided hands-on training in stitching and garment making, along with basic entrepreneurship skills.
The initiative forms part of Samsung’s community development efforts around its manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu, with a focus on creating practical livelihood opportunities for women.
Kumari, tailoring trainer for the programme in Santhavallur, said many participants had little or no formal tailoring experience when they joined the programme.
“Today, they are confidently stitching garments, taking customer orders and thinking about how to build a steady income,” Kumari said, adding that the growth in participants’ confidence had been a key outcome of the initiative.
For participants, the programme is intended to provide a direct pathway from vocational training to income generation.
Divya from Santhavallur said the training had given her the confidence to start working from home, while the sewing machine would allow her to begin immediately.
Nandhini from Sirumangadu said she hopes to use her new skills to take tailoring orders in her village, contribute to her household income and become financially independent.
Samsung expands community initiatives in Tamil Nadu
Samsung has been manufacturing in Tamil Nadu since 2007, with its Sriperumbudur facility forming a significant part of its manufacturing footprint in India.
Alongside its manufacturing operations, the company has undertaken initiatives in the state covering education, skills development, innovation and community development.
Its Samsung Innovation Campus programme provides young people with training in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, while Samsung DOST focuses on industry-ready skills for retail and technical service roles.
Through Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, the company also encourages young innovators in Tamil Nadu to develop technology-led solutions to real-world challenges.
The tailoring programme extends Samsung’s community development focus to women living around its Sriperumbudur manufacturing facility, with the objective of helping participants convert vocational skills into income opportunities within their local communities.
