NIBE Group Bets Big On Indigenous Defence Systems With Shirdi Plant

CW Bureau ·

India’s push towards defence self-reliance received a major boost with the inauguration of NIBE Group’s Defence Manufacturing Complex in Shirdi, Maharashtra, by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The new facility will focus on manufacturing advanced artillery systems, missile and space technologies, rocket systems, energetic materials and autonomous defence platforms, strengthening India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

A key highlight of the event was the flagging off of India’s first 300-km Universal Rocket Launching System, ‘Suryastra’. The foundation stone for a dedicated missile complex for the rocket system was also laid during the ceremony. In addition, indigenous TNT Plant Technology, RDX Plant Technology and a Renewable Bio-Energy Compressed Biogas Plant were unveiled.

An MoU was also exchanged between NIBE Group and BlackSky for collaboration in satellite assembly.

Private sector role gains momentum
Speaking at the event, Rajnath Singh stressed the importance of self-reliance in ammunition production and said the new complex would help meet the operational requirements of the armed forces while supporting the country’s industrial ecosystem.

He noted that defence manufacturing, once largely restricted to public sector undertakings and ordnance factories, was opened up to private players under the government’s Make in India push.

“A nation that manufactures its own weaponry writes its own destiny,” Singh said, adding that the government recognised the capability of private industry to transform India into a global manufacturing hub.

Focus on future warfare
The Defence Minister said future wars would increasingly depend on advancements in munitions, automation and indigenous technologies rather than the sheer size of armed forces.

Referring to global conflicts and India’s own Operation Sindoor, he said modern warfare has demonstrated the growing importance of advanced weapons systems and automation.

Singh added that the missile complex for the Universal Rocket Launching System could become a strategic game-changer for India’s defence preparedness. According to him, the indigenous rocket system would significantly enhance the country’s strike capabilities.

Employment and MSME opportunities
The Defence Minister also highlighted the economic impact of the project, stating that the facility would create opportunities for MSMEs, ancillary industries, suppliers and local vendors.

He said the manufacturing of missiles, ammunition, rocket systems and satellite components would generate employment and help equip local youth with advanced technological skills.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said India’s defence ecosystem has undergone a major transformation through the active participation of both public and private sectors under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. He added that India’s growing indigenous defence capability continues to strengthen national security while contributing to global peace and stability.
