Siemens Lands Pune Metro Contract, Strengthens Urban Mobility Portfolio

CW Bureau ·

Siemens Ltd, a leading technology company focused on industry, infrastructure and mobility, has secured an order from Titagarh Rail Systems to supply advanced propulsion systems and Train Control & Monitoring Systems (TCMS) for the Pune Metro Rail project extension, strengthening its presence in India’s fast-growing urban mobility sector.

Under the contract, Siemens will design, manufacture, supply and provide warranty support for traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors and TCMS for 12 metro trainsets that will be deployed as part of the Pune Metro expansion.

Boosting metro modernisation
The order marks another step in the adoption of advanced indigenous rail technologies for urban transportation projects in India. The propulsion systems and TCMS are critical components that ensure efficient train operations, enhanced energy management, real-time monitoring and improved passenger safety.

The project also aligns with the country’s broader push towards sustainable and efficient public transportation systems amid rapid urbanisation.

Focus on Make in India
Siemens Ltd Chief Executive Officer, Mobility Business, Rajeev Joisar said the partnership reflects Siemens’ commitment to supporting India’s expanding metro rail ecosystem with advanced propulsion and train control technologies.

“We are pleased to partner with Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd on the Pune Metro project. This collaboration is an important step in our journey to support India’s rapidly growing metro market with advanced Propulsion and TCMS technologies,” he said.

Joisar added that as India continues to invest in sustainable urban transportation, building a strong local manufacturing and technology ecosystem has become increasingly important. He noted that Siemens remains committed to developing advanced mobility technologies by leveraging its manufacturing and engineering capabilities in India, in line with the government’s Make in India initiative.

Strengthening indigenous rail ecosystem
Titagarh Rail Systems Vice Chairman and Managing Director Umesh Chowdhary said the collaboration reinforces the company’s commitment to localisation and indigenous manufacturing.

According to Chowdhary, Pune Metro holds special significance for Titagarh as it marked the company’s entry into the passenger rail systems segment and introduced India’s first aluminium-bodied metro coaches.

He said the additional option contract would further strengthen the aluminium train ecosystem in the country while accelerating the indigenisation of critical metro technologies.

Chowdhary added that the partnership with Siemens has the potential to evolve into a long-term collaboration aimed at supporting India’s urban mobility ambitions.

Growing opportunities in urban mobility
India’s metro rail network has witnessed rapid expansion over the past decade, creating significant opportunities for domestic manufacturing and technology providers. As cities continue to invest in modern mass transit systems, demand for advanced propulsion, control and monitoring technologies is expected to rise, supporting the development of a robust local rail supply chain.

The Siemens-Titagarh partnership underscores the increasing emphasis on localisation, technology development and sustainable transportation solutions as India seeks to modernise its urban mobility infrastructure.
