Ambuja Cements Ltd, the Adani Group’s cement and building materials company, has partnered with UK-based clean technology firm Leilac Ltd to develop commercial-scale low-cost, low-carbon cement.
The commercial demonstration project will be implemented at Ambuja Cements’ 6.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Sanghi plant at Sanghipuram in Kutch, Gujarat.
Commercial-scale project
The project aims to demonstrate technology that can significantly reduce carbon emissions from cement manufacturing while improving energy efficiency.
Subject to successful demonstration, the facility could be scaled up by seven to eight times to capture more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, potentially making it the world’s largest industrial-scale project of its kind.
The companies said the initiative could provide a scalable pathway for low-carbon cement production in India and global markets.
Management comment
“The cement industry’s transition to a lower-carbon future will require bold thinking, technological innovation and collaboration across the value chain,” said Ambuja Cements Director Karan Adani.
“Our partnership with Leilac reflects our commitment to evaluating next-generation technologies that can reduce process emissions while improving energy efficiency and supporting long-term sustainable growth. This initiative aligns with our vision of building world-class manufacturing operations for the future,” he added.
Future proof solution
“We’re delighted to begin this collaboration to deliver a commercial-scale project for low-cost, low-carbon cement production,” said Leilac Chief Executive Officer Daniel Rennie.
“Together, we aim to demonstrate an economic, replicable and future-proof solution for the global cement industry,” he added.
Sustainability focus
The partnership forms part of Ambuja Cements’ broader efforts to reduce the carbon intensity of cement production and support the transition towards sustainable building materials.
