India’s aerospace manufacturing ambitions received a significant boost with the commissioning of Merlinhawk Aerospace’s advanced composites manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. While the inauguration itself marked another industrial milestone, the larger significance lies in what the facility represents for India’s long-term strategy to become a global aerospace manufacturing hub.
The facility highlights a broader shift underway in India’s defence and aerospace ecosystem—from supplying components and undertaking build-to-print contracts to developing indigenous capabilities in advanced materials, precision engineering and high-value manufacturing.
Why advanced composites are becoming critical
Modern aircraft, helicopters, drones and defence systems are increasingly dependent on advanced composite materials that are lighter, stronger and more corrosion-resistant than traditional metals.
These materials help reduce overall platform weight, improve fuel efficiency, enhance durability and deliver superior structural performance, making them indispensable for next-generation military and commercial aerospace programmes.
As demand for advanced aerospace platforms grows worldwide, manufacturing composite aero structures has become one of the most strategically important capabilities for aerospace companies.
Moving beyond component manufacturing
India has steadily emerged as a preferred manufacturing destination for global aerospace majors over the past decade. However, much of this growth has largely been centred on component production and engineering services.
The Merlinhawk facility signals the next phase of this evolution.
Equipped with integrated capabilities including cleanroom layup, precision cutting, autoclave curing and five-axis CNC machining, the plant enables end-to-end manufacturing of advanced composite structures, from design and engineering to finished products.
This transition from build-to-print manufacturing towards integrated product development could significantly enhance India’s competitiveness in global aerospace supply chains.
Technology transfer strengthens ecosystem
A key differentiator of the project is its partnership with Italy-based Vega Composites, which brings advanced manufacturing know-how and specialised expertise in composite technologies.
The collaboration enables technology transfer from Europe while introducing globally aligned manufacturing processes and aerospace-grade quality standards into India’s manufacturing ecosystem.
Such partnerships are increasingly becoming essential as India seeks to reduce dependence on imported technologies while simultaneously meeting stringent international certification requirements.
Tamil Nadu emerges as a defence manufacturing hub
The facility is located in Shoolagiri within the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor, one of the six defence corridors established to strengthen India’s indigenous manufacturing ecosystem.
Tamil Nadu has rapidly emerged as one of India’s leading aerospace and defence manufacturing destinations, benefiting from strong industrial infrastructure, engineering talent and a growing supplier base.
The addition of advanced composites manufacturing further deepens the state’s position in high-technology manufacturing.
Supporting Make in India and global exports
Beyond serving domestic defence programmes, the facility has been designed with exports in mind. As global aerospace companies diversify their supply chains, India is increasingly positioning itself as an alternative manufacturing base for high-value engineering products.
Facilities capable of producing globally certified composite structures could enable Indian companies to secure larger roles in international aerospace programmes while supporting the objectives of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
At full capacity, the plant is expected to generate employment for more than 200 skilled professionals while strengthening India’s expertise in advanced materials and aerospace manufacturing.
Company sees facility as strategic milestone
Merlinhawk Aerospace Pvt. Ltd., Founder & Managing Director, R. Merlinhawk Composites & Engineering Pvt. Ltd., CEO, Commodore (Retd.) Bharat Bhushan Nagpal, said the facility has been developed with a focus on precision, quality and compliance with global aerospace standards while also investing in talent development and long-term capability building.
Vega Composites, CEO, Roberto Lapini, said the joint venture reflects a strategic industrial partnership between India and Italy, with India emerging as an important manufacturing base for advanced composites serving both domestic and international markets.
