India continued to dominate the global rough diamond trade in 2025 despite not producing a single carat, importing 106.1 million carats valued at $11.07 billion, according to the latest Kimberley Process data.
Although the value of imports declined about 9.1% from $12.18 billion in 2024, India’s share of global rough diamond import value increased to 43.25% from 39.56%, underlining its position as the world’s largest diamond manufacturing and trading hub.
Global production declines
Global rough diamond production fell 8.4% to 98.8 million carats in 2025 from 107.9 million carats a year earlier. However, production value declined only 3.15% to $9.23 billion from $9.53 billion as average prices improved.
The average global price per carat increased to $93.43 from $88.35 in 2024, indicating stronger value realisation despite lower output.
Top producing countries
Russia, Botswana and Angola together accounted for 63% of global rough diamond production value in 2025.
Russia retained its position as the world’s largest producer, mining 31.5 million carats valued at $2.72 billion. Production declined 15.6%, while value fell 18.3%, with the average price remaining broadly stable at $86.46 per carat.
Botswana produced 15.5 million carats, down 14.5%, but the value of production surged 45.5% to $1.98 billion. The average price per carat jumped over 70% to $127.66, reflecting a richer mix of diamonds.
Angola bucks the trend
Angola emerged as the only major producer to register growth in production volume, value and price per carat simultaneously.
Output rose 8.3% to 15.2 million carats, while production value increased 28.3% to $1.81 billion. Average price improved 18.4% to $119.22 per carat.
Congo the largest producer
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remained one of the largest producers by volume, mining 8.9 million carats. However, it continued to have one of the lowest average values at just $5.01 per carat, compared with Namibia’s industry-leading average of $343.88 per carat.
