Bharti Airtel Ltd., one of India’s leading telecommunications and digital services provider, is strengthening its presence in financial services, data centres and cloud computing as part of its strategy to build new growth engines beyond telecom, said Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal.
In his letter to shareholders, Mittal said Airtel’s calibrated investments over the past few years have yielded strong outcomes and reinforced its conviction in three key adjacencies: financial services, data centres and Airtel Cloud.
Alongside these businesses, the company continues to invest in digital infrastructure, advanced technologies and strategic partnerships to support the next phase of growth across India and Africa.
Growth engines
Mittal said Airtel Money Ltd., a subsidiary of Bharti Telecom Ltd. (BTL), has received approval from the Reserve Bank of India to operate as a non-deposit-taking Non-Banking Financial Company.
He described it as a significant milestone for the company and for expanding financial inclusion in the country, adding that the business would be suitably capitalised over the coming years.
Data centres
In the data centre business, Nxtra is on track to build 1 GW of capacity over the next few years. Mittal said India’s rapid digitisation, rising cloud adoption and growing data localisation requirements present a compelling long-term opportunity.
Nxtra’s US$1-billion fund raise from marquee investors, along with Airtel’s participation, validates both the opportunity and the company’s execution capabilities.
Airtel cloud
Airtel Cloud, meanwhile, is witnessing encouraging traction by offering sovereign, telco-grade cloud services hosted in India, enabling enterprises to access secure and cost-effective cloud infrastructure.
Technology focus
Airtel continues to strengthen its technology ecosystem through partnerships with global companies including Adobe, Apple, Cisco, Ericsson, Eutelsat OneWeb, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, Nokia, Oracle, Qualcomm, Samsung and SpaceX.
These collaborations combine world-class platforms, networks, devices and digital capabilities to deliver differentiated customer experiences and accelerate new-age services.
Embedding AI
The company is also embedding artificial intelligence, automation and advanced digital tools into the way it designs and operates its networks.
Airtel said AI has helped improve network reliability, energy efficiency and operational responsiveness while enhancing customer experience.
Its AI-powered spam detection solution, an industry-first initiative, has significantly reduced unsolicited calls and messages, while early use cases of GenAI-based agentic bots in customer service have shown encouraging results.
The bank has also begun deploying agentic AI tools to equip frontline employees with real-time information for faster and more accurate customer service.
Network expansion
Airtel continues to invest in nationwide 5G deployment, fibre infrastructure, submarine cable systems and Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) networks to deliver secure, resilient and high-speed connectivity.
The company has achieved 5G Standalone readiness and is accelerating investments in transport networks and next-generation capabilities to support future digital services.
Invests ₹3.3 lakh crore
Mittal said Bharti Airtel has invested more than ₹3.3 lakh crore over the past decade to build one of India’s strongest digital infrastructure platforms.
The emergence of the 5G economy is expected to unlock new opportunities across industries through high-speed, low-latency connectivity.
Future outlook
Looking ahead, the company will continue leveraging advanced digital platforms to improve efficiency, strengthen sustainability and build a faster, more resilient organisation that is well positioned to lead the AI-first era while powering growth across India and Africa.
