CW Bureau ·

Air India has crossed a major digital milestone with more than 1 million passengers connecting to its inflight Wi-Fi service between June 2025 and June 2026, highlighting the growing demand for seamless internet connectivity at 35,000 feet.

The Tata Group-owned airline said inflight Wi-Fi is now available on an initial fleet of 28 Wi-Fi-enabled aircraft, operating more than 55 daily flights to key international destinations, including London, New York, Newark, Frankfurt, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bali, Manila and Mauritius.

Onboard internet usage doubles
Passenger adoption of the service has increased significantly over the past year, with the proportion of travellers using onboard Wi-Fi rising from 30% in June 2025 to 55% in June 2026, reflecting changing passenger expectations for uninterrupted digital access while flying.

Air India said the trend demonstrates the increasing importance of inflight connectivity as travellers seek to remain productive and entertained throughout their journey.

Social media dominates usage
According to the airline’s usage data, 89% of connected passengers used the service primarily for streaming and accessing social media platforms, while the remaining 11% relied on the network for web browsing, emails and messaging applications.

Overall, passengers consumed nearly 500 TB of data during the one-year period. Streaming services accounted for 86% of total data usage, with web browsing making up the remaining 14%.

Connected fleet to expand
Air India said the current figures represent only the beginning of its connected-cabin strategy, with additional aircraft expected to be equipped with Wi-Fi as the airline expands the service across more routes and destinations.

The airline noted that as its connected fleet grows, passengers will have greater opportunities to remain digitally connected throughout their journeys, whether for work, communication or entertainment.

The expansion of inflight connectivity forms part of Air India’s broader transformation programme aimed at enhancing customer experience through technology-led initiatives, modernising its fleet and improving onboard services.
