Air India has won the prestigious Airline Strategy Award for Digital Leadership from UK-based aviation publication FlightGlobal, earning global recognition for its technology-led transformation following its return to the Tata Group.
The award acknowledges the airline’s rapid digital overhaul, including the deployment of more than 140 enterprise systems, AI-powered customer services and one of the aviation industry’s fastest technology integrations following the merger of Air India and Vistara.
The award was presented to Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Air India, and Dr Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Air India, at a ceremony in London organised by FlightGlobal in partnership with management consulting firm Korn Ferry.
Recognition for digital transformation
The Airline Strategy Awards are regarded among the aviation industry’s most respected honours, with winners selected by an independent panel comprising airline experts, consultants and former airline CEOs.
Air India was the sole recipient of the Digital Leadership award this year. Previous winners in the category include United Airlines and Ryanair.
The award recognises Air India’s digital transformation journey since the Tata Group acquired the airline in 2022, with technology becoming a key pillar of its turnaround strategy.
Technology powering customer experience
Air India has rebuilt its digital ecosystem from the ground up, creating a cloud-first technology landscape with over 140 enterprise systems in just about two years—a transformation that typically takes airlines more than a decade to complete.
The airline has also revamped its customer-facing digital platforms, including its website, mobile applications, notification systems, inflight entertainment and AI-powered virtual assistant.
Its mobile application has been downloaded more than 17 million times and carries a 4.8-star rating on both Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store in India.
AI at the centre of operations
Artificial intelligence has become central to Air India’s digital strategy. The airline’s generative AI virtual assistant, AI.g, launched in May 2023, has handled more than 26 million customer queries while achieving a 97% containment rate, reducing dependence on human intervention for routine customer interactions.
Air India is also working on more than 30 Agentic AI initiatives across business functions as it seeks to evolve into what it describes as an “Agentic Airline.”
The airline has also introduced data analytics across customer touchpoints, enabling cabin crew and frontline employees to deliver more personalised passenger experiences using digital tools.
Paperless workforce and seamless merger
Air India has digitised employee operations across pilots, cabin crew, aircraft engineers and ground staff through proprietary applications and iPad-based workflows, eliminating paper-based processes and improving operational efficiency.
The airline also highlighted the successful technology integration during the merger of Air India and Vistara, describing it as one of the fastest airline technology integrations globally.
The merger brought together more than 10 million loyalty programme members, around 300 aircraft and over 30,000 employees, with the integration of over 140 technology systems completed in less than a year.
Management speaks
Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the award recognises the progress the airline has made since returning to the Tata Group and reflects the commitment of employees driving its transformation.
He said digital initiatives have played a critical role in enhancing customer experience, empowering employees and improving operational excellence, adding that technology will remain a key differentiator in Air India’s ambition to become a world-class global airline.
Air India Chief Digital and Technology Officer Dr Satya Ramaswamy said digital technologies and artificial intelligence have become the operational backbone of modern airlines and are essential for delivering superior customer experiences and sustainable competitive advantage.
He said the airline had transformed from operating only a handful of systems to building an extensive digital ecosystem of more than 140 platforms, while its customer and employee applications have significantly improved service quality and operational efficiency.
