Olectra Greentech Ltd has become the first company in India to deploy 4,000 electric buses on the country’s roads, achieving a major milestone in the nation’s transition towards cleaner public transport.
The landmark was marked by the handover of Olectra’s 4,000th electric bus to the Himachal Pradesh government during the flag-off ceremony for 297 electric buses inducted into the fleet of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC).
The event was attended by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, senior state government officials and executives from Olectra Greentech.
Industry-first milestone
With 4,000 electric buses operating across multiple states and cities, Olectra has strengthened its position as India’s largest electric bus manufacturer. The company said its buses transport millions of passengers while helping public transport operators reduce fuel costs and emissions.
The milestone comes as state transport undertakings continue to accelerate fleet electrification under central and state government initiatives aimed at decarbonising public transport.
Environmental gains
According to the company, its fleet has collectively covered more than 730 million kilometres, avoiding over 6.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. The large-scale deployment is expected to contribute significantly to improved urban air quality and lower dependence on fossil fuels.
The company said the achievement demonstrates the increasing acceptance of electric buses as a viable alternative to conventional diesel-powered public transport.

Olectra Greentech Managing Director Mahesh Babu said the deployment of 4,000 electric buses represents a defining milestone not only for the company but also for India’s electric mobility sector.
He said the induction of the 4,000th bus in Himachal Pradesh reflects the growing confidence of state transport undertakings in electric mobility and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to innovation, large-scale manufacturing and sustainable transportation.
